Neil Young should take notes from Roger Waters. Now that's what a freaking rockstar is suppose to be Neil Young, anti-establishment, edgy, against censorship.

Waters has openly blasted twitter for their censorship, denied Facebook's requests for using his music and publicly said Mark Zuckerberg can f**k off - called him “one of the most powerful idiots in the world” and said many other awesome nasty true things about Zuck/FB. Oh and he's also been one of the largest voices out there in standing up for Julian Assange and calling out the US & UK gov't for their outright assault of the 1st amendment in their continued attempted prosecution of Julian Assange.

Oh and his music is actually f**king awesome, unlike Neil Young's shitty ass music.

Interpretation: Freedom of Speech and the Press | The National Constitution Center

True threats: Threats to commit a crime (for example, “I’ll kill you if you don’t give me your money”) can be punished. Watts v. United States (1969).

c. “Fighting words”: Face-to-face personal insults that are likely to lead to an immediate fight are punishable. Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire (1942). But this does not include political statements that offend others and provoke them to violence.  For example, civil rights or anti-abortion protesters cannot be silenced merely because passersby respond violently to their speech. Cox v. Louisiana (1965).

Sort of interesting that "fight speech" itself can be illegal except when the speech is political.

I simply raised the issue, in a general sense, with no slant either way.  Then one poster read into what I posted what never was there, which isn't that unusual around here.
issue should never be raised. government has no businesses engaging in being the "ministry of truth". it's barred by law from doing so. and thank f***king god for that.

Well to be fair, Roger Waters actually IS a rock star, while Neil Young is more of a... well... a folk screecher, i guess?

Another poster decided I hated Muslims because I noted the Battle of Tours was important in world history.
Yes, but when pressed on the issue you kept highlighting that freedom of speech was not without limit... Suggesting that you were pushing the point.

So when someone said "apparently someone thinks it's okay for the government to decide what is misinformation", I was just highlighting that, when pressed multiple times, you certainly didn't object to that characterization.

And again, which is to say that you might think it's legally permissible, which is a far cry from saying you think it's a good idea or something we should do.

Exactly. "Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelt of elderberries!" can be in the 'fighting words' category.

"I disapprove of promiscuous women and drunks" cannot.

I have tried hard to be very clear, my opinions on this topic generally are very soft and not formed.  I clearly see the danger of government censorship, but I don't see a need to declare that every time someone goes ballistic with hyperbole.

Trust me, CD... I understand.

In this case, you were perhaps not as clear as you intended.

If I was confused as to your meaning, imagine what the hyperbole crowd took from your words! :57:

think he's referring to twitter - which let's leaders from other countries- like Iran - tweet some pretty heinous, ridiculous, outrageously offensive shit - yet this same company bans it's US users willy nilly for basically nothing - they were banning people for saying cloth masks don't work- banning people for the dumbest sh*t - hell they banned the President of the United States lol - and no one in the US seems to have a problem with this or think it's batshit crazy.
Ahhh yes.

That's the issue of doing moderation as PR, and the reality of the scale. But that's their first amendment rights at work, I suppose (even if they're sort of against the spirit of the first amendment in some ways).

this scares me...76% of Democrats polled are in favor of censorship by tech monopolies, meanwhile 65% are in favor of censorship by some sort of government action. f**king scares the shit out of me.

While regrettable, this is a bit of question bias in polling. It's a broad base ("take steps") and hits on a polarizing issue. If you flip to another issue, you'd likely be able to get right wing folks near about if not more censorious.

As a people, we're somewhat bipartisan in that way.

The point being, Twitter really is pretty much a leftist echo-chamber and I believe you're assigning a lot more weight and value to it, than it probably deserves in the grand scheme of social influences out there.

I think this would be a bit inaccurate. Twitter is whatever echo chamber you build for yourself. Even if it was predominantly lefty (which I'd bet was a mild overstatement), a person cannot consume the tweets of even a million people, let alone more than that.

So it can be a righty echo chamber, communist echo chamber, Nazi echo chamber, and perhaps most seriously in need of government intervention, a Texas Longhorns echo chamber. It is what you build of it (and in truth is probably most prominently trash or nonsense stolen from someone else)
