Somebody needed to tell NYC this when they balked at Amazon putting a major office there

threw away 5,000 potential jobs
There's a degree to which already-high-value locations don't need to kowtow to corporations with corporate welfare...

Kinda like the reason that you'll never find a Louis Vuitton bag "on sale". They get full price because they're LV.

More along the lines that once you get a reputation for corporate welfare, everyone's got their hands out. And you can hurt yourself.

That doesn't mean that high-value locations don't do it... They do. Big cities, as we covered in this thread, are MORE than happy to open their pocketbooks to build stadiums for billionaires because they fear them leaving. And big cities engage in garden-variety corporate welfare too.

But NYC is the financial center of the universe. Why should they lower themselves by kowtowing to Amazon?

Yup. Corporate welfare is one of the biggest problems this country has.

Not convinced Amazon really even wanted it's HQ2 in NYC anyway. Not a coincidence they settled on a suburb 15 minutes away from Washington DC nor that Bezos bought the Washington Post nor that Amazon has billion dollar contracts with the CIA. Bezos is a slime ball of the highest order and the reason he chose Arlington is so that he can be close to the levers of power and spend a fortune lobbying the federal government and currying favor.

it's New York City. Not Detroit. They don't have to make corporate welfare giveaway deals or beg businesses to come. They will come.

I looked it up and it was 25,000 jobs not 5,000

but Virginia and Tennessee got it instead and they say a big thank you

I mean, they're not thrown away, really. They don't exist in the NYC metro, and instead exist in the D.C. Metro.

Like, 5,000 Americans, somewhere, are employed (I'm unclear if that includes the building of the place, but that's another matter). NYC could've shelled out some taxpayer money as an incentive, and then moved tax revenue from one place to another. If it was in a vacuum, NYC would've paid more than the 13.5 percent cost of living difference to make Amazon more than whole, but chances are Arlington paid something too, so the difference isn't that stark.

There's an interesting game there. In a vaccum, Amazon is taking that to rural Alabama, or something, as you can employ people more cheaply there. But the talent they want is likely not amenable to Gadsden, Alabama (snobs), so they have to go somewhere that's gonna be more pricey.

The financial center of the universe isn't a place, it's online.  It's everywhere.

theres a lot more things the voters want in addition to lower taxes like lower inflation, crime reduction, secure borders, and many others
Elected politicians have precious little to do with inflation, they just take credit and lie about that.

They have a modest amount to do with crime reduction, though even that link is weak at best (they are good at spending up to make people feel like crime is down)

Most pols have little or nothing to do with the border. But many will act like they do, as telling people what they want is key to getting elected.

But those do make good slogans, that's for sure.

Hence what OAM suggests is appropriate in a free market, but this is anything but a free market.

That's the point of asking the rhetorical and leading question...

Are you suggesting that it's appropriate for governments to operate as For-Profit entities?

BTW when my wife's office had to give their medical assistant [MA] a raise recently, it's because starting wages at Target were $1/hr more than she was making as an MA. Now, an MA is not exactly the top rung in a doctor's office... It's pretty much the bottom. But it's still something that you have to go to school and be certified to do. And retail was making more.
So this woman went to school for and had to get certified for a job that paid a hair over $29k a year in not only SOCal, but a pretty affluent part of So-Cal?

Something isn't totally adding up here. Either that, or your wife's office kinda deserved to lose her. Like, even if Target is only paying $24k a year, or sub-sustenance, she's probably looking to leave. She's probably not earning much more than the janitor at that salary.

this just isn't true. policies they enact both domestic and abroad can affect inflation both directly and indirectly.

For example- the current senile diaper wearing President Dipshits feud with Saudi ruler MbS has been a major driving factor in inflation. Trump kissed MbS ass- first state visit he made as President was to the Saudis. Gave them a huge weapons deal on the visit. Trump stroked MbS ego and played the guy like a fiddle- getting him to ramp up oil production when we wanted and then getting him to slash production when we wanted. President shits his diapers still refuses to speak to or even acknoweldge MbS- MbS is a petty man who doesn't take that insult kindly- which is why MbS had been putting the screws to him.
