When workers get $15/hour to flip Big Macs... The Big Mac then costs $10.00. Worker still cannot afford Big Mac.

We stopped a couple times at McDs when traveling for breakfast.  They all had ordering stations like I saw in France years ago.  One was closed due to COVID, and for some reason the ones near Macon, GA are all without indoor dining and service, every one of them.

Automation will replace low skilled jobs in increasing numbers over time, obviously, and we may find we need universal income because a fair portion of the population will be unable to work.

Isn’t universal income what we have now?

that's not true at all. assuming mcd's entire payroll is min wage (it's not) and assuming they'll want to pass along 100% of increased costs (they will, probably more like 175% if history of major corps is any judge), then the cost for their payroll to effectively double would be an average increase on products sold to be around 13%. So the big mac would go from $3.99 pre-tax (as listed on their website, i haven't eaten there in i don't know how long so no clue if its slightly different), to around $4.50.

a purdue study from a few years back found it to be quite a bit less of an increase, only about 4.3% increase, or $0.17 cents to $4.16.

and looking at europe, which the average min wage is roughly $12-13, but also typically offers far better benefits, has an average cost of a big mac around $4.75.

i'm generally not for the gov sticking their head into most issues, but the cost of living has increased a significant amount (housing/rent, transportation - both autos and fuel, utilities, food and other necessities, etc) and if the corps won't take it upon themselves to reinvest in the workers then maybe the gov should step in. its well overdue. and corps aren't hurting, they're posting record profits every qtr.

minimum wage not only increases minimum wage earners wage but will also increase wages for any employee making what the new minimum wage is and on and on

the company is forced to give wage increases almost across the board to keep its employees

and yes when the dust settles the company will pass it on to the consumer

Badge, are those your local Florida prices?

I know fast food prices out here in CA are significantly higher than most other places. While you could say that's due to wages, I think a HUGE portion of it is due to the cost of real estate. I think the dirt below the restaurant is driving the price a lot more than wages.

It's also one of the reasons that gas is so expensive out here. I highly doubt it's due to the lone register jockey sitting on a stool in the convenience area. (There are other reasons, i.e. taxes, unique blend, etc. But cost of land is a huge one.)

fwiw, the #'s i posted were the burger only, not the meal, and the % would hold either way.

Could be.  You could test that theory by checking the prices of McDonald's meals in LA and San Francisco compared to... say... Bakersfield.  If there's a big difference that could indicate that land is a major contributing factor.  If they're the same or close, then it would likely indicate something more systemic.

I don't have the app and the web site apparently won't show me menu prices.

And I'm not driving to Bakersfield to test it lol.

check link in my reply right above yours. high of $7.09 in ma, low of $4.19 in nc. those are state averages, individual cities will vary.
