Did you go to Cooter's?
Nope, I think we did pass one somewhere, I was not disposed to try it.  I was hoping to find some fresh seafood somewhere, but I suppose that is impossible in touristy areas.  We had lunch at some place called Crabby's Dockside which was about akin to a Red Lobster.  We had brunch at the Clear Sky Cafe which was commendable, but brunch isn't that much of a challenge.  We tried the Palm Pavillion and it was "OK" and also had dinner at the hotel (which got pricey in a hurry).

In North Port, everything is part of the package so I had no options.  The final dinner was at some golf club and was buffet style and mediocre indeed.  They had one dinner at Sharky's on the Pier that was mediocre.  I was hoping to find one of those places with their own fishing boats.

Hilton Head has a couple of those.  Clearwater Beach is nice enough, modern and clean, nice white sand beaches, but boring.  I had reserved it for three nights be we left a day early, in part because it was going to rain.

I'm not calling you stupid I'm saying when we have a labor shortage we need more people to work, and that means immigrants. And there is a big supply of immigrants who want to come here and work. It's a pretty easy solution, but literally no one in politics is pushing for it, I imagine because they don't want to be unpopular. Legal immigration has declined over the last five years - that we have labor shortages should be of no surprise to anyone.
We don't have a labor shortage. We have an excessive amount of money pumped into the economy, going directly to those not wanting to work and willing to sit back and cash government checks. This has forced business owners to increase their wages in hopes of attracting people to work by paying them more than the government has.

The problem is, currently the government is paying them enough to get by saving them from having to actually work for a living. That will not continue for long as something will need to break.

The best thing to happen recently was for Congress to not support Biden's plan to spend more than another $5 Trillion of money we don't have. The government pumping money into the economy is the absolute worst thing that they could do to curtail inflation.

They don't want to be a line cook. They want to learn about art history. If they can make that work for them, God bless. In the meantime, let the people who will travel hundreds of miles to be line cooks be line cooks.
Quit paying them for wanting to learn about art history as it is no benefit to the taxpayer. When they hungry enough, they will go be a line cook or something else to put a roof over their head and food in the belly.

What we are doing now is paying them to do nothing. I personally don't care if they lay around or not, but I don't want my hard earning tax dollar paying for their lifestyle choice. That is their responsibility.

Extended unemployment ended last September, and it didn't make a difference.

Yeah, I can't speak for all states, but here in Texico the extended benefits ended last July.  No notable impact on the labor shortage.

June here.

Let's see what the expiration of the expanded child tax credits does. That just happened.

Regardless of everything else, is there really no benefit to having people study art history? Does preserving culture and history have no value at all?

Seems unlikely to do anything because it isn't much money. I suppose could exacerbate the problem by making people more likely to stay home. Day care is a racket.

You don't have to waste 4+ years and massive debt (that they are begging to be forgiven) to learn about art history.

Trust me.

I remember how expensive it was 30 years ago, when my wife and I were both working.

this is a great read

https://www.cato.org/commentary/americas-ukraine-hypocrisy

And Chomsky nails this topic as he typically nails everything, from around 7 or so years ago. He also brings up a great point- funny how everyone is crying Crimea! Crimea! When the United States invaded eastern Cuba and took it over by gun point, still owns it today and has used Guantanamo Bay as a torture chamber to illegally capture, imprison, and torture people from 3rd world shitholes with no due process, no rule of law.....but...Crimea! Crimea!

Majors like art history are fine with me so long as the numbers coming out match the numbers needed in the job markets.  There is a clear need for STEM majors, but STEM fields are "hard".  So folks major in "sociology" where opinions matter and anything goes, basically.  My org chem class started with 180 odd and ended with 33, I heard that many of the missing went to business majors.

As for Ukraine, I am not seeing much risk that US forces will be directly involved, so I don't know why anyone is proposing otherwise as an option.  Russia is equipped for land combat near its borders.  Ukraine might be a tough nut if they want it all.  I have no clue how many "Russians" are in Ukraine now and would welcome an anschluss.  They could have a lot of Russians in their military that could do considerable harm.
