Well the GFI (or GFCI) is a special outlet, that has a "ground fault circuit interrupt" detection in it.  They're used in areas with moisture like garages, outside outlets, kitchen counters, and bathrooms.  Normal outlets are pretty bullet-proof, to break one would either require user-error during installation, or plugging in something that caused an over-current condition and burned it out (but the breaker at the panel should trip before that).

The GFCI outlet on the other hand, has the detection circuitry inside of it, which goes bad after a long (or short) while.

Hmm.  Well then I don't know what I installed.  I just went to Lowe's, bought a bunch of outlets to replace those dinosaurs from the 40's and 50's.  Can't really say I looked at what particular kind they were.  They're working *shrug*

If you didn't purposefully purchase and install GFCI outlets, then you most likely installed standard outlets.  Either will deliver power to the device that is plugged into it.   Only one provides ground fault interrupt protection.

Depending on where you live, those became part of the electrical code sometime in the 70s for outside outlets and bathrooms, and probably more recently for kitchens.

GFCIs would obviously cost quite a bit more than regular outlets.

Just looking at some pics online, they don't look like they wire up any differently than regular outlets.  Doesn't seem like they'd be any different to replace than the standard ones.  If I can do it, my assumption is anybody else here can do it.

Yes, they install the same as a standard outlet.

The idea of GFCI is that if the return current isn't the same as the source current (i.e. it's shorted out and that current is going somewhere else, such as into your body), then it shuts off the outlet power and you have to reset it, hence the reset button.

Right.

I wasn't trying to say they're more difficult to install or that CD would be incapable of installing, they go in just like a regular outlets.

I was just pointing out that their purpose and operation is different, and that modern electrical building code requires their use in certain areas.

Our outlet is both outside on the deck and inside in the dining room, well, it's two outlets back to back, both with a GFCI inside.

I doubt my wife would let me replace it.

I suggested that to her, she doesn't think it's the same as a "real lock".

It would take a gymnast to break into this place anyway, and there isn't much to steal that you could tote away without using the elevator.  But theft/burglary is a serious problem in France Utopia.
Fixed.

The reset button makes it a little more obvious, now that he mentioned it.  My bathrooms are indeed filled with those outlets.  My outside outlets on the front and back porch are not.  This house was built in 2008.

Check in your garage. The master GFI for the outside may be in there on a wall somewhere.

Yes, one single GFCI outlet can serve the entire circuit as long as it's placed first in-line.  So the outdoor outlets might appear to be normal, but in reality they're protected by another outlet somewhere further upstream-- in the garage, for example, which is exactly where mine is as well.
