My dad's rule was that every new project should require at least one new tool to accomplish it... That way you slowly build up :72:
61 yo here, I had a grandfather who could fix about anything, but specialty was car repair, my dad was an electrician until he went into the ministry both taught me a lot.  I grew up doing all my own repairs, remodels, etc.  I can do car repair (well on older cars which aren't totally computerized), electrical work, plumbing, dry wall, cement work, whatever.  Not much I haven't done, though finish wood work is beyond my patience. However about 10 years ago or so, I realized my time was more valuable than the money "saved" by DIY and I really didn't enjoy it.  I won't work on a car at all and won't do most things around the house, unless I know I can fix it in less than a hour and I have what I need.

I use to have all kinds of tools, I have sold off most of them except for basic socket wrenches, various screwdrivers, couple of hammers, a wrench set, pliers, channel locks, allen wrenches, a circuit tester and an electric hand drill.

I would rather spend my time out on the golf course or out listening to live music and dancing.

Sheeeeeeiiitt.....plenty of places I ain't going to visit in the good ol USA.  Those jackholes can keep California, for example, they don't need my money until they do something much different with themselves than what they're doing.

I just looked up "GFI outlet" because I didn't know what that was and assumed it was well beyond my knowledge.

It's just a damn outlet.  Fancy initials like GFI confused me.

I changed out a whole house worth of those in my grandma's house a while back because us grandkids and all the great-grandkids kept not being able to plug up their three pronged power cords for the iPads, iPhones, laptops, etc.  The outlets are not truly grounded because there is no ground-wire in the walls, but the way I did it, my electrician great uncle told me it was not quite un-grounded either.  Whatever weird state could exist between grounded and not-grounded, I don't understand it.  Mainly the modern plugs fit now, but it's also a hair different/better/safer than the old outlets, although not truly grounded.  So he said.

I, uh...admit to going the sissy route and shutting the breaker off first.

I was trying to get a belt pulled off a snow blower a few years back and one step son helped me, to no avail.  We worked on it for half an hour, couldn't get it through a small orifice that afford access.  My other step son stopped by and asked what we were doing in reach in and had the belt out like magic.  He can pretty much fix anything.  He rengined a Lexus going from an in line six to a turbo four, on his own.

My guess is that GFI is simply bad, bummer.  I have a work around, I can plug the grill into an inside outlet and that works if I leave the slider cracked.

This condo has seven sliding glass doors, I've never had so many, and they were all wonky when we moved in, but we had someone repair them for not too much.  Now the handles are failing and it's tough to find a replacement.  I got one that looks nice but you can't lock it, and my wife wants to lock it, on the ninth floor.  I guess someone could rapel down from the roof.

Well the GFI (or GFCI) is a special outlet, that has a "ground fault circuit interrupt" detection in it.  They're used in areas with moisture like garages, outside outlets, kitchen counters, and bathrooms.  Normal outlets are pretty bullet-proof, to break one would either require user-error during installation, or plugging in something that caused an over-current condition and burned it out (but the breaker at the panel should trip before that).

The GFCI outlet on the other hand, has the detection circuitry inside of it, which goes bad after a long (or short) while.

I suggested that to her, she doesn't think it's the same as a "real lock".

It would take a gymnast to break into this place anyway, and there isn't much to steal that you could tote away without using the elevator.  But theft/burglary is a serious problem in France.
