I do as much of my own work as my body will allow. I find it fun.
I did, until we had children.  And probably will again someday.  I coach all of their sports, and drive them to their other activities, so I no longer enjoy spending my 2 hours of free time on a Saturday doing a DIY project while a 6 year old whines at me

Yeah there was a period when the kids were young when that was the same for me.  Now they're in their tweens and teens, their demands on time are diminished.  And next year when both of them leave club sports and go to all in-school sports, it's going to be like I've won the free time lottery.

When we get back home and I get healed up, I'm gonna bust two new circuits for my outdoor kitchen. I'm not doing any plumbing out there, or I'd do it myself. The kitchen sink is only steps away, so don't need it.

When I moved into this house, it had 11 circuits, including only ONE for every GFI in the house. The GFI was in the garage, which took me some time to figure out. None of the bathroom or kitchen our outside outlets were working, and then it dawned on my.

The house now has 26 circuits, with two more to come.
U RAH RAH! WIS CON SIN!

@utee94 How is late June typically for Austin? One of the doctors at my wife's practice may be on vacation at that point so we're talking about places to do a long weekend. Wondering if the inside-out mist is mostly cleared during that time, and the heat not completely oppressive?

You're probably safe from the inside-out mist and the roaming bands of kidney thieves.

As far as temps, it's still going to be pretty warm.  Highs in the mid 90s are average and some days could get to the upper 90s.  Lows down in the 70s so mornings are pleasant.  Personally I find it to be a nice time of year.  Late July to early August are the worst, you're pretty much guaranteed multiple weeks in a row of 100+ temps.

If you do end up coming down and want some recs on food/activities let me know.

My dad was a maintenance supervisor at a LP gas plant and also a water well driller/repair guy. So I've done more than my fair share of repairs on vehicles and all sorts of other things.  Dad never was a great carpenter, and I'm not either but I've built small sheds and poured concrete and all sorts of other things like hung sheetrock and laid ceramic tile.

I completely rewired a house, rewired parts of my house during a remodel, changed out the breaker boxes, replumbed entire houses, and lots more that I'd prefer to forget.

Honestly I've hired out more jobs in the last few years than ever simply because I don't have the time to finish anything within a reasonable amount of time.  Plus it just leaves me exhausted and takes away from my fishing.  Luckily my kids never really played much sports, but we fish.  We have a nice 20' boat that we take to the saltwater about 15 minutes away and catch lots of redfish, trout, flounder, and whatever else is biting.  And the best part is that we do it together.

I kind of wind up being in the clear with electrical stuff right now, since one of my stepsons is very good at that, does electrical-adjacent work for a living, carries all the necessary tools at all times, and just loves to show you what he can do.  I don't even have to ask him for something, I just mention that there's something going on I'd like to get done and 5 minutes later he's waist deep in it, like a 5 year old saying "look at what I can do!"

I can do a little bit of carpentry without youtube, but really I feel like the end of the line for the two sides of my families.  My maternal grandfather was a railroad man by trade, but a jack-of-all trades by hobby and learning.  The man could do literally anything, and built the house my grandmother still lives in back in the 40's all himself.  And all the upkeep and remodeling through the years, of course.  Brilliant woodworker too...he made some really nice chests, bookcases, toys, gift-type items, etc. in his day.  He was a very patient guy and loved to teach me things, but unfortunately he passed at 65 and I didn't get many years with him.  My dad and one of my uncles are both ace carpenters, another uncle is a great mechanic, but all of them will basically get the job done when it comes to something that's not their forte, like plumbing or electrical.  My dad is not a patient man or much of a teacher, and I didn't pick up much of what he knows.

YouTube is a great resource, and I've used it a ton, but also there are some things that in the real world you have to be careful for at times or you'll cost yourself a ton of time and money, or worse, a safety hazard, and I'd still rather somebody help me who knows what they're doing for some things.  I have a bunch of physical problems that prevent me from doing an awful lot, but what little I can still do, I'm slowly trying to build my tool arsenal up because I live away from my dad now, and I can't raid his workshop just any old time like I used to.

My dad's rule was that every new project should require at least one new tool to accomplish it... That way you slowly build up :72:

I've mostly got all the handtools I need for routines jobs that come up around the house.  What I really lack is power tools.

You know how Badger said that people my age and younger have a great education in fine arts....well we also have a killer sense of entitlement too.  As in, my dad is an old fart now, he mostly just works on his saw mill and takes naps, he should just give me his horde of power tools :-D

Back in college I helped a good friend in Baton Rouge do new crown molding in his house.  He had no more budget than I did at the time, and we did it all with a miter box and a handsaw.  When I got home dad asked me how it went and I told him about it, he rolled his eyes and said "Y'all ever heard of a chop saw and a skillsaw?"  He regrets making that point, because from then on, jobs like that meant I raided his saws, nail guns, and air compressor.  He'd catch me pilfering his tools, and I'd just say "Hey, you don't want me doing something the dumb, slow way, right?"  Then he'd walk off grumbling under his breath about needing to get my own stuff.  Despite the fact I still lived at home and had nowhere to put anything, should I have somehow had the money to buy it.

Restoring the Airstream, I collected a pretty massive set of power and air tools.  I even have an air driven 3x rivet gun, the kind used to assemble commercial aircraft.

They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

It's why I brew beer.

Because when the excrement hits the air circulation device, and the world devolves into anarchy and cannibalism, I know that I'm, to put it nicely, "well-marbled". But nobody eats the guy who can make the beer.

Wife and I are scaling it back for January, in addition to a diet.

I'm up a pound so far :smiley_confused1:
