It's nice to finally have a policy on COVID this year
Yeah, OK. Same policy as April 2020. It's up to the states, with federal support, to manage this virus. The good news is it won't be much of a problem for much longer.

I don't agree with that at all. The federal government has been pretty aggressive pushing vaccines and making them widely available. They are apparently doing the same for tests, which I think is overkill.

Helping to make vaccines available to the states isnt the point at all.  The state is the one that sets up distribution points and testing points and mask policy not the Feds

If Biden would please make more home testing kits available that would be appreciated

I think The federal government, state, and local government has been pretty aggressive pushing vaccines and making them widely available since vaccines have been improved.

Which is a no brainer.

unfortunately, education about the vaccines, how it's helpful even if it doesn't prevent infection,  and dispelling myths and other negative thoughts that give some folks reason to not take the jab fall woefully short.

just saying, "get the shot" or "perhaps we will require proof of vax to fly commercial" isn't enough

poor messaging today as it has been

The B1G has announced changes to its forfeiture policy as it relates to COVID-19 postponements and cancellations.

Here is the new policy, per the release from the B1G:

If a team or teams is/are unable to participate in a scheduled Conference competition due to COVID-19, and as a result the competition is unable to occur on the calendar day on which it is scheduled, the competition will not automatically be considered a forfeiture. Upon review and approval by the Conference office, in consultation with the participating institutions and the Big Ten Chief Medical Officer, Dr. James Borchers, the competition may be rescheduled, or declared a no contest or a forfeiture. The Conference office will be responsible for rescheduling any conference competition postponed due to COVID-19.

The number of competitors available – i.e. seven scholarship student-athletes for women’s and men’s basketball – and the availability of at least one countable coach will be factored into the decision-making process. A team that is below the number may still decide to compete if deemed safe by appropriate medical personnel (i.e. the decision to postpone a competition will not be automatic even if a team is below the number).

Conversely, a team that is not below the number of requisite competitors and a coach may still determine that it is unsafe to compete. In such case, forfeiture will not be automatic, but an institution would need to demonstrate to the Conference office, including the Chief Medical Officer, the circumstances that have led to a determination that it would be unsafe to compete. A team that does not compete, and is unable to demonstrate why it is unsafe to compete, will be assessed a forfeiture. Postponed competitions that do not result in forfeiture but are unable to be rescheduled will be declared “no contests.”

Want to mention a movie I watched last night- Netflix.

Don’t Look Up.

Star studded. But a great poke fun at our world today.   Worthwhile.  Still laughing today.

Got my son an Arduino programming kit for Christmas.

Instructions said it works on Chromebook. He's got a Chromebook for school work, so I figured that'd be fine. If not, we've got an old laptop with Linux so I figured that'd be a good fallback.

Turns out it doesn't work cleanly on the Chromebook. Could probably figure it out, but all the instructions are for Windows/MacOS/Linux. And I want to get it up and running, not spend all day trying to adapt instructions (that I want him to follow, not do everything for him) to Chromebook.

So, off to the Linux laptop. It was my wife's old Windows laptop that was already old as hell when I met her in 2016 and she barely used for anything not requiring web surfing. So I dropped an SSD into it and loaded a simple Linux on and it revived it for a few years. Then she basically gave up on it in 2020 when I got her an iPad Air, so it's been sitting for a year. Turns out it's on its last legs. Battery has a critical failure, and then it just started locking up during use within the first few minutes of just trying to add a new Linux account for my son and trying to download the Arduino software.

So... I don't want to buy anything new, and it's time to get creative.

I broke into Developer Mode on the Chromebook, and installed Ubuntu in a dual-OS config so he can still use it for school while simultaneously having a pure Linux environment for the Arduino. The Ubuntu for Chromebook install isn't perfect, but so far it appears I've made it functional--we just need to find out whether it'll connect to the Arduino board.

A day and a half, and I've finally gotten beyond step zero in the instructions! But hopefully this will be getting him to a starting point where he can do the rest without me.

Get a charger for cheap and just keep it plugged in?

Once my laptop starting giving me trouble with the battery, I went online and bought 2 chargers for cheap, plugging them in at the only 2 places I actually used it.

I'd be fine with that but the other instability with it constantly crashing was troubling me. That wasn't battery-related. I think I've got a fair number of unused Dell chargers around here anyway.

Honestly looking online I can see replacement batteries in the ~$24-40 range. If I want to make a project out of trying to figure it out further, I'll just buy one.
