I'm amazed at the depth and breadth of the obsession over some spoiled grape juice.  Although it's no more silly than obsessing over 20 year olds playing football.
I sometimes wonder about culture.

I'm a 43 year old upper middle class white male.

I'm into:

  • Wine
  • Cigars
  • Whiskey/bourbon/scotch
  • Steakhouses
  • Golf
  • Classic rock.

These things all feel completely natural to me... And yet they're all the things that my SES cohort like...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Board of Supervisors in San Francisco were meeting Thursday to consider an emergency order requested by the mayor to tackle the opioid epidemic in the city’s troubled Tenderloin neighborhood, with some members clearly dismayed that the declaration could be used to criminalize people who are homeless, addicted to drugs or both.

The public health emergency declaration allows the Department of Emergency Management to re-allocate city staff and bypass contracting and permitting regulations to set up a new temporary center where people can access expanded drug treatment and counseling.

But advocates for the homeless and substance users are urging a no vote because Mayor London Breed has also pledged to flood the district with police officers to halt crime. Public health officials encourage treatment for drug addicts, not punishment, but Breed has said that people consuming drugs in public may wind up in jail unless they accept services.

Supervisors said they welcomed the idea of treating a drug epidemic fueled by cheap synthetic fentanyl as the crisis it is. More people in San Francisco died of overdose last year than of COVID-19.

Not much on Cigars- but I check all the other items on your list.  Add performance cars and dogs.

I've been meaning to watch Dopesick.  It has ravaged Appalachia.  We foster, and the system is absolutely overwhelmed, both in terms of the number of kids it is putting into the system, and the number of kids in the system who are born with the junk in their system.

Two of the three we've had, had user parents.  Our current foster daughter had four different substances in her 3 lb body at birth.  It's a miracle she's as healthy as she is

Wine is an avocation for me obviously, I enjoy it, the history, the chemistry, the taste, and particularly visiting wine regions.  Every avocation is a bit odd I think.  But life would be pretty boring without any.  Some folks only have work.  I've seen a few cases of that, it's pretty depressing.

I'm doing wine "classes" here once again, really just tastings with a few comments by me.  We have a small group that enjoys it so far.  My group in Ohio grew to be a bit of a pain really.  Drinking is popular apparently.

Champagne and sparkling wines are underappreciated as food pairings.

Champagne is basically crappy wine with bubbles to mask that it's crappy.
