I trust drunks way more than trust fund babies. Especially if they have good stuff and share.

bottom line:  there are plenty of ways to effectively tax the ultra wealthy

but, it will never happen, because they own the folks that control taxes
I actually don't think it's possible, at any amount that would mean anything.  You could tax them a few percentage points on yachts or whatever else and they'd pay it, but to what end?  If you tax them severely, you can look to Europe for what happened.

The trust fund babies are drunks too. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Again, 2-party system. The voters voted for her because she had a "D" after her name.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York%27s_14th_congressional_district

That congressional district has gone to that political party since 1993. They very well may have elected Mickey Mouse [D-NY] if he'd run.

BTW for whatever complaints you [and I] have against AOC, she is educated. Double major in international relations and economics and graduated cum laude from BU.
And if I were in charge of that university, I would pay her to never again claim to have a degree in economics from that school. Either that or bulldoze the Business College and apologize the country to maintain some credibility. That women has shown time and time again that she has no clue of how the economy works.

State governments are run by political parties. They will answer to politicians, ones that are very good at legislating themselves into strong position to hold power with fewer votes.

I imagine we'd get a different kind of congress with a different kind of cronyism. Maybe better, but certianly not free of many, many of the issues we have now.
Yes, I know that state governments are run by politicians. That was not the point. You will NOT get politics out of the equation.

You completely skipped the reason for my suggestion in that we begin to remove power from Washington DC and get some power back to the states where it was intended.

I don't think it at all viable to repeal 17 nor to have term limits.  Not gonna happen.  Neither is much else suggested here.

Some things we have to live with even though they are akin to Eastern Michigan.
I would never have believed that we would have significant portions of this country wanting to do away with law enforcement. But as we have seen the last couple of years, that is exactly what has happened in some areas of the country.

I'm not saying it will happen nor that it is likely to happen, I am just stating one of the major flaws that was introduced into our system of government that has not worked out well for the country. If enough people become aware of the possibility, as they did with the defund the police movement, perhaps there can be a groundswell of support for the idea. Keeping it to myself does non of that.

Yep. Off to party now. Pretty much worked all day here on the ship. Brought my computer and a small printer.

I really want to retire.
A printer? But why?

And may I suggest the retirement starts with those two things going over the railing.

No area of the country has done away with law enforcement.  And I personally see essentially no way 17 gets reversed or we have term limits, so I personally don't see them as viable options or desires.

I guess I still don't totally see what that does. It seems to say "the states" are not the people of the states, but the folks in the statehouses. Which, if we want the senate to be an insulated distillation of our statehouse's interested. I've lived in five states, and I've not looked at one and thought "Man, that statehouse is the panacea for bad corrupt government."

The down-the-road effects are interesting. All that senate race money just pours into local races. Pours in. And every redistricting is a bloodbath because the amount of a thumb that can be put on the scale there is pretty crazy. For any issues one might have with the senate, they're not allowed to redraw states to favor them.

In short, I still struggle to see the upside. Making politicians in Columbus, Ohio, Tallahassee, Florida, Sacramento, California or Springfield, Illinois more powerful and insulating senators more doesn't seem a particular net good, especially in an era where states are more arbitrary as designations, not less.

I think it's impossible since the folks that collect taxes just won't do it.

corporations could also be taxed more heavily, but........... not gonna happen

and yes, as long as the wealthy can move about the planet to another state or country that allows them to avoid taxes, taxes will be avoided
but a few percentage points could be collected on much more than yachts.
Plenty of rich folks and corporations have not to this date moved out of California to avoid higher taxes
