The portion being constructed is in the Central Valley.  The active fault lines are neared the coast.
So it's running from Fresno to Bakersfield, right?

If the bookends are rubble, does it matter that the middle held up? lol

Would the government overstep if the wealthy didn't turn into scurrying cockroaches when the light of honestly and regulation is shone on them?
The Government gave them those roach rights already - they're part of the problem, maybe THEE problem.

well, you can call it an industry - is it really a big deal to the bottom line?

needlessly?? maybe

are yachts needed?

perhaps it would be better to needlessly kill a few more billionaire funded industries?

I know, I know, it's the american dream to become a billionaire and own multiple yachts
I'm sure the folks building those yachts were happy with their jobs.

You know, American jobs. In manufacturing. The ones we seem to keep lamenting about them being gone...

Maybe we should institute a 200% tax on golf clubs and golf balls, and on greens fees and country club dues... After all, golf is a sport that wastes real estate and is played mostly by rich white people.

I'm sure you won't mind that industry being killed?

There are no bookends, it's only being built in the Valley.  And California has a lot of infrastructure in earthquake areas, like BART and those bridges.  That's where the people live.  Now one notion is to run Diesel electric locomotives over the "high speed" track so it would easily be connected to regular track.  And oddly that makes some sense to me.  That central portion really has no viable use.  This was easily projected to end up a disaster when it was proposed.

I think HSR will be obsolete before it's ever constructed in the US because of autonomous vehicles.

We spent two days in St. Tropez a few years back.  Our host took us to a bar over looking the waterfront.  Holy cow, the docks were packed with enormous boats, but the real boats were out in the bay anchored, the size of destroyers, I don't know how many.  They looked to be 300 footers.  In France.  Of course, they could have been owned by Saudis and folks from Monaco, another incredible lodging of extreme wealth, in Europe.

Many countries in Europe tried a wealth tax a few years back and nearly all reversed it.  "We" think of Europe as being "soclaistic" and it simply isn't, much anyway.  The tax burden there falls on the middle class much more than here.  And yes, they get more stuff, but they pay for it in taxes.  Sweden's tax system would kill our middle class, almost literally.

You don't have to tax all that, just the water usage.  :)

And the reason for that is that it's the only area where you can afford the land.

The goal is a terminus in LA and in SF, running through San Jose and up the peninsula. Three of the most expensive places in the US for land. Even if you're condemning things under eminent domain, you have to pay just compensation, which is ridiculously expensive.

So people decide to go camel's nose under the tent idea and figure if you build the easy part, you can offer a sunk cost argument to build the rest. But I don't think it'll fly. So you'll end up with a useless effing train from Bakersfield to Merced that nobody rides.

if it kills any clubs over $500 each retail, golf balls more then $50 per box, green fees over $150 per 18, country club memberships over $20,000 per year

hell yes
it won't kill it, long term, they would pay the additional tax
just like the yacht industry
they just didn't like it and told the folks that levied the tax

bottom line:  there are plenty of ways to effectively tax the ultra wealthy

but, it will never happen, because they own the folks that control taxes

The Adele concert on CBS last night didn't suck. The interview portion with Oprah was a bit pretentious though...

Again, 2-party system. The voters voted for her because she had a "D" after her name.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York%27s_14th_congressional_district

That congressional district has gone to that political party since 1993. They very well may have elected Mickey Mouse [D-NY] if he'd run.

BTW for whatever complaints you [and I] have against AOC, she is educated. Double major in international relations and economics and graduated cum laude from BU.
Those two useless degrees got her a job as a bartender. Nice work.
