The fact that someone can say "only 174K" sickens me.
The sort of people who run for Congress are educated, white collar professionals. Lawyers. Doctors. Businesspeople.

For a lot of those people, $174K is likely to be a pay cut.

They're in it for the power, not the money.

If you really want to affect change in Congress, repeal the 17th Amendment. Prior to the 17th, US Senators were selected by the State Legislature. They were accountable to the state and not some political party. They didn't need to run for election because they were appointed. And if the state legislature didn't care for how they were voting, they could be replaced.

The Senate was supposed to be the states voice in the Fed Gov't. The House was the People's voice. Now you have 2 houses of congress that are subservient to the whims of the public, constantly running for election and kneeling the to alter of the party leaders for committee positions and funding.

The other net affect is that after the 17th went into affect, much of the power of Congress was legislated to the Executive branch through numerous new departments with unelected regulators that essentially now write laws through regulations. Congress needs to take this power back and maintain it where the founders had originally placed it.

I have learned not to pine for things that are pretty much not going to happen, like the Braves ever winning a WS again.

If you really want to fix Congress, a proportional representation scheme rather than our first-past-the-post voting metric and direct representation of a district would go a long way.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proportional_representation

Voters vote for the "R" or "D" after someone's name for a House of Representatives or Senate rather than the actual name, so why not accept it and make a voting scheme that makes sense?

Everyone claims that they hate the two-party system. Proportional representation is the only way to end it.

For sure.

Again, 2-party system. The voters voted for her because she had a "D" after her name.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York%27s_14th_congressional_district

That congressional district has gone to that political party since 1993. They very well may have elected Mickey Mouse [D-NY] if he'd run.

BTW for whatever complaints you [and I] have against AOC, she is educated. Double major in international relations and economics and graduated cum laude from BU.

Different system. That's still direct representation.

From the wiki article it looks really interesting, though. I hadn't really ever read up on the Nebraska legislature.
