I would think the French would have the best fries
So would they, if you asked them. But of course the French think they have the best everything... Because it's French.

well what about dip, toast and of course kiss

has this been a sham all these years
French Dip was apparently invented in LA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_dip

And the kiss is overrated compared to the Aussie version.

The French dip was invented in SoCal?  Wasn't everything?

And the French do have the best wine and cheese, their snobbery is merited in those areas.

The article lays it out pretty clearly, basically we tax income, and a billionaire doesn't need income.  I'm quite sure they chuckle over any current tax the rich notions.

I understand this

doesn't mean that politicians couldn't propose another way to gather taxes besides income

you know, like a sales tax on luxury items or something else targeted at the ultra rich
but politicians don't want to tax themselves or their buddies

As I recall, some of it was on yachts, and the yacht business came to a screeching.  The sales of slightly used yachts from Europe however did just fine.

But one could in theory tax items that cost over some high price, say $100,000.  I'm not sure it would raise much revenue.  There is an argument that a pure wealth tax in the US would be unconstitutional, and it has done poorly in Europe where it was widely tried, and widely reversed.

call it unconstitutional, point to examples of past failures, use whatever reason/excuse

bottomline:  the ultra rich don't get taxed in the USA - the government is in charge of taxes - congressmen, Senators, Presidents, Supreme court justices have more money than average

Congressional salaries should be the US average every year.  Might get some of the selfish, greedy riff-raff out.

the salaries are fine in my opinion

it's the fringe benefits that bother me

I'll give them the cheese. Not necessarily the wine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judgment_of_Paris_(wine)

Take away the salary, and suddenly you're going to have people who are still motivated by the same selfish, greedy, motives but who are even MORE "up for sale" than currently.

BTW Congressmen don't make much... Only $174K. That's not peanuts, but in the DC area it's not gonna go far.

Played golf today. Hot as hell. Hit the high 80s by the time we finished up (11:45 AM PT). I wish I had brought the umbrella for my push cart for the shade protection.

Par is 60, and I shot an 81 for +21. One of those rounds where I didn't have a single blow-up hole (i.e. triple bogey or worse), but I simply couldn't convert when I needed to. Too many holes where I turned a chance at par into a bogey, or turned a bogey into a double.

I think it's going to move my handicap back out of the "teens" because it'll age out a +15 in the calculations...

I finally finished, had to read it in spurts.  Gallego is now a US Congressman from AZ wth a degree from Harvard, and a combat Marine infantryman.  Those vehicles were designed for amphibious assaults, floating on water, so you can imagine they were not well armored or appropriate for transport in the desert.  They couldn't even use them to cross the Euphrates because they were not equipped for that.
