Never had Detroit, but looks more like a Sicilian to me.
That's because Sicilian pizza was also invented in San Diego.

And now-- cue @betarhoalphadelta to swoop in and provide wikipedia links to prove that Detroit style pizza was invented in San Diego...

:)

I don't know nothin bout birthin no babies Detroit-style pizza.

I've been told that the "Motor City Pizza" sold frozen at Costco is actually quite good.

And that was from a guy who spent a lot of his life living in San Diego, so he's an expert.

Lou Malnati's is the best Chicago pizza. The dough is much crunchier than the chunk of white bread you get at Giordano's.

I've made Detroit pizza from scratch before. That dough is really lightweight, very airy. I think the key to that is to use warm, almost hot water, to get the yeast going at the start. Also, it needs to be left in the oven a little longer in order for the cheese in the center to just about brown over. That picture you're showing got brought out just a little bit too soon.

It's really good stuff.
Agree with Malnati's.

I think Pizzeria Uno/Due [the ones downtown, not the chain] used to be the best, but they've REALLY fallen off over the years.

Malnati's is the best at being what Uno used to be, and they're remarkably consistent across all their locations.

Gino's East is legit, but I still think Malnati's is better.

Detroit is Sicilian pizza but baked in a converted auto parts bin.

If your travels ever take you to Rhode Island, make sure to visit Cantanzaro's Pizzeria in Cranston, RI. Absolutely fantastic pizza.

Straight from the Mafia.

It's ok for frozen pizza. A little bready. I like their little individual kirkland ones better.

The Kirkland pepperoni pizza (not individual, sold as a 4-pack) is really quite good for frozen pizza. The equivalent cheese pizza from Kirkland isn't; their crust is different and not very good.

We also buy the cauliflower crust veggie pizza there. Not bad for cauliflower crust.

Those are always good for nights when we don't want to cook and just need to eat something.
