Is Premium Gas Worth It? We Test High Octane on 4 Popular Vehicles (caranddriver.com)

The answer is of course it depends, but use whatever is recommended for your car.  A high performance turbo probably "needs" premium.

I've said this for years. High compression engines require high octane. Low compressions engines don't, nor do they benefit from higher octane than recommended.

Ford's recommended fuel for my twin-turbocharged V6 is 87 octane.  They do, however, note that increased performance can be had with higher octane fuel.

There are a lot of guys on the forums that insist towing with higher octane fuel yields more power and better results.  I've never had any problems with towing on regular unleaded, and the cost delta with buying premium fuel at 8-10 mpg towing, would be considerable...

Yeah, there's a caveat to my statement regarding what octane to use in a car.

It used to be "as long as it doesn't knock, you don't need more octane". But modern engines can retard ignition timing as a matter of self-preservation if you're using an octane too low, which will end up not providing optimal power. The article CD posted also suggested that turbocharged engines will dial down the boost to avoid knocking.

I suspect that's what Ford is doing, and the article CD posted supported that as well with significant power differences between octanes and measuring lower boost on lower octane. Ford has ensured that the engine will run safely without knocking on 87, but it does it by not allowing the engine to run at its full potential power.

That said, I think it's still a bit of an anomaly for most cars. Most cars today have a minimum required octane and see no real benefit by going over the minimum. There will be a small number that benefit from higher octane because they're effectively detuning their engine performance to avoid knocking when lower octane is used.

High compression is of course relative, most engines today have it relative to 1973.  My old Nova had 8.5:1.  And of course turbos generally operate at lower compression than nonboosted engines if you calculated compression normally.  My GTI is at 9.6:1, but then there is boost.

It is recommended for premium fuel and I usually use it (Costco).  The guy at the dealer said to use it all the time, and I suppose he's right if I want to get all the power out of it.

Most cars of course run fine on regular.  Premium often has lower fuel value anyway.

Uh...aren't violent gangs well armed and looking out for each other? That's pretty much the literal definition of a gang.
They are well-armed, illegally, and they don't know how to shoot. If they did, there would be a lot more dead people.

The rural fork would destroy a gang that showed up. They can shoot fast animals and flying animals.

Gang bangers couldn't hit a barn.

But if we call in the National Guard to police protests, that isn't tyranny?
Not when cities are burning.

Gotta train the citizenry there better.

I love how that absurd discussion had died off, and then badgerfan comes through like a bull in a China shop, tromping around and leaving nothing but shattered finery in his wake.

Well done, sir. :)

Yes, and as you know, I lived through that for 3 nights.

Then the guard showed up, and poof. Done.

We left as soon as we saw two pickup trucks parked in the marina parking lot, filled with gas cans. Harbor fires are not good.
