In a city, one needs more government than in the country.  This is why there is such a large rural-urban divide.

I suppose we could enable everyone legally in a city to carry firearms, but few like that idea and it probably would engender unintended consequences.

I had some conversations with my "French cousins" about this.  They asked me why we didn't have a tall fence around our yards here in the US.  I mentioned nearly every house was heavily armed (which isn't true), but they nodded.  In France, houses in the suburbs are heavily fortified, in part because they say their police are pretty useless and they can't as readily own firearms.  Even the farmhouses in Normandy look like fortresses.

I am far more dependent on "government" here in the middle of a large city than I would be in the 'burbs, or in the country.

Discussing Pizza,I'd like to give Detroit Style a shot try.Have seen it on cooking-travel shows prolly D,D & D being one of them.Decades ago some Guy used thick rimmed sheet just the right guage from the auto factories to cook his Pizzas in and the metal held/distributed heat just right. They have quite a following-fan base

Uh...aren't violent gangs well armed and looking out for each other? That's pretty much the literal definition of a gang.
Perhaps but rural folks most certainly have home field - certainly hope it never gets to this

Violent gangs sound like they are violent, as opposed to heavily armed folks acting within the laws who are not violent unless attacked.

Sort of a major and obvious difference.

I doubt it

Germany debates how to form gender-neutral words out of its gendered language : NPR

This cracks me up.  A major component of German and French et al. is genderosity of words, it's a pain for English speakers.

I take it as another sign as to how much "we" want to read about our teams, and how much "they" need clicks.

College football bowl projections after Week 9 (247sports.com)

All this changes weekly, and they project every minor minor bowl game.  I can't for the life of me see why it means anything.

Except "we" want to read it I suppose.

Maybe...what makes us think the violence isn't mostly just different groups of people responding to other violence in the community?

Violence associated with gangs is illegal in nearly every instance and coupled with other illegal activities.  This is obvious of course, but you are welcome to somehow justify violent gangs as being somehow the same as rural folks who are armed and mind their own business.  I doubt anyone else sees much parallel.

Country folk tend to be peaceable in the main even if heavily armed.  And there are of course rural gangs as well.

Rural life leads to more independence and self sufficiency.  Folks often have a well and septic tank, they do need electricity and fuel, which they can buy untaxed if used in farm equipment (this gets abused).  The Co-op is often used and useful.

My life here is quite different versus my life on my grandparent's farm back in the day.

They are not well armed and not well trained in those arms. They have some toys that can fire a round, but they are NOT well armed. I have several rifles that could take them out long before they got close enough to begin to fire my way. And my firearms collection is laughable compared to several of my neighbors.

We also train quite often. It is not unusual to hear gun fire around the neighborhood as a lot of my neighbors have rifle and pistol targets set up on their property. I have another neighbor about 2 miles away that has a set up that includes Trap, Skeet houses and rifle and pistol ranges. He asks for donations if people want to come and shoot. During the summer, another friend of mine go there on Thursday evenings and shoot rounds of trap.

I mean...maybe. Letting people work out there own differences without government regulation is underrated. Well, it's highly rated until you frame it as a question about "stopping crime" and then everyone wants as much regulation as possible, at least for other people.

You couldn't be more wrong. The only need we have for police is traffic enforcement. Out here in the sticks, we occasionally get people that believe that there are no speed limits. The stupid part is that they sometimes become predictable. For example, we had a guy that would fly down our road and blow the stop sign down at the corner cross roads every day at about the same time. After a few times of this, we called the sheriff and he had a deputy set up waiting for him. I took about 1 or 2 days and he was stopped. Haven't seen him since.

Granted, they aren't as well funded.
