That places you in with 98% of the rest of the population.

utee94 has described me as a contrarian, and while he's clearly wrong about that, I have noticed that in people who agree with my conclusions, most of them arrived there in the dumbest ways.  It's hard to give credit to people who arrive at a good destination with faulty maps, on accident.
I agree entirely because my horoscope told me this morning.

The irony and hypocrisy of some of these posts has me laughing out loud.

To me, a contrarian is someone who looks for different explanations and approaches for things, like say Einstein, to name one.  In corporate culture, this is generally disliked, a lot, versus go along crowd, which means the go along fellows end up being managers, who like other go along fellows, not the squeaky wheel types.

It's even worse when the squeaky wheel ends up being right, that gets you in hotter water.  Better to be silent.

I should wite a book.

I do share your anger at some people who act like they're smarter than everyone else. When they're clearly not.

I only do so because I clearly am.

I'd say that's you applying your own filter to the label contrarian. A contrarian, basically by definition, is someone who goes against the flow to go against the flow. Hence Mike saying that 94 calls him a contrarian, but he's clearly wrong about that lol...

What you're describing is a heretic. Someone who calls out conventional wisdom as wrong and is hated because others so desperately want it to be right.

I have a serious case of confirmation bias.  I try to fight it but it's hard to know how well I succeed.

It's hard when the world is composed of entities who know this about me and use it against me.  Facebook, Google/YouTube and the like have spent a gazillion dollars on focus groups, measuring things that give me tiny hits of dopamine, and adjust their algorithms accordingly.  They want me surfing their crap 24/7.  They're not inclined to show me things I disagree with.  It could lead to the impression that I am sane, and "they" must all not be.  A popular sentiment in online argument comments is something like "What world do you live in?!??!!"  In fact, in the online world, studies show that people of naturally varying opinions, the more time they spend online, they effectively ARE living in an entirely different world.

Well....some ideas and people are insane.  But not all of them.

Everyone has a problem with confirmation bias, myself included. You can get ahead of the curve if you a) recognize that confirmation bias is a thing and b) actively TRY to fight it. And it's still hard a f. But if you at least try, you'll be less affected than some.

Completely agree. I've said here for a long time while you've been away that we now no longer all live in the same reality. People have been able, through dozens of media outlets, news sources, social media, etc to construct the reality around them that makes them feel good. They can construct their own little confirmation bias bubble, wrap it around them at night, and sleep soundly basking in their own superiority.

It's to the point that for many people, the only time that they interact with the "other side's" beliefs is when their own side tells them what the other side believes. Yeah, I'm sure that is going to be a fair retelling.

So we grow to think that there's no way any reasonable person could believe what we've been told the other side believes, so they must be dumb, or evil, or insane. You get a much different picture, of course, reading what the other side says out of their own mouths (and based on the best communicators amongst them, not cherry-picking the most bombastic). Sometimes things actually sound almost, dare I say it, reasonable!

Anger?  Lol.

I said I was laughing out loud.

it seems like accusing someone of confirmation bias is a usually an example of confirmation bias.

ponder that.  😂

We had a fair bit of training on confirmation bias in grad school.  It didn't take for some I thought.  But there was a desire to seek alternative explanations and you got credit for that even if you were wrong.

I've seen various research that concluded that in politics, liberals and conservatives generally want the same things, but disagree on the order of priorities and how best to achieve the goals.  That seems right, in my experience.

There are extremes on either side who don't appear to want the same things as the most people.

Sounds about right - you get a lot of people extremely angry about politics but rather unable to articulate what is making them so angry
