It's one of my great weaknesses. I like having civil conversation. It's in fact why I come here. Because in a world where people meander about deciding to say things because they'll get some jollies from making people mad, this place is a nice receive. Was, anyway.

Now run along, do some meth and sample the child brides like you South Utah folks do.

Not that at all. Fro? He's fun to troll because he is a troll, and he's the best kind of troll; one that can dish it, but he can't take it.

You? More like shooting fish in a barrel. We both know that California isn't going anywhere. We are stuck with them until they turn us into a third world country. So you already won this "debate" without having to say a word. Yet you got your knickers in a knot over the mere suggestion that was clearly made in jest. Wishful thinking. And you did that in spite of the fact that you are currently an East Coast resident who is probably from Wisconsin initially.

Well Alec Baldwin might accidentally rack up a few kills, but at least half of those are bound to be friendly fire.

I am. I know it. I like good conversation and people when they don't spout anti-american trash. That's my thing. More earnestness than should happen on the web. I shouldn't let it get to me, and just be happy you hopped off your child bride long enough to post.

(The irony is I really think people should leave California. Mostly because I'd like to go back, because I really like a lot of this country and because as an econ major, I think price should be a big determining factor.  But alas, it's just too good a state, and people keep wanting to be there despite the economic insanity of it. It's where I'm from, not Wisconsin)

Interestingly, there was a point where I was talking with an ex about parents when they start losing independence (she had a plan that was frankly kind of insane and should've been a sign that it might not go the full long term which I'd share if anyone cared), and that turned to asking my parents their thoughts. The answer was basically, whichever kid was the most geographically settled, they'd find an old folks home and move there.

At the time, there was something vaguely funny to me about my family just being like "yeah, if it comes to it, we'll depart the bay area and live in the south." There was something kind of calming that it wasn't a hill they were gonna figuratively die on.

(Then my mom explained "but that only really happens when something catastrophic happens or one of us dies" which was both calming and not calming at the same time)

Progress isn't opening the gates and leaving everyone eat for free unchecked.
No one said it is.  You're inventing a talking point.

Conservatives are FAR, RADICALLY too worried about the strain the poor and needy cause compared to the corporations.  I've never seen a poor person export a job to India.  I've never seen them hold a half dozen states financially hostage in hopes of getting my next big distribution center.  The subsidies of self-described "succcessful" companies is heinous.

Oven died on Wednesday night. The thermostat stuck open, so when I tried to turn off the oven at the end of the night it wouldn't budge. I had to turn off the gas supply and unplug the oven to get it turned off. Which means that not only can I not use the oven--I can't use the stove either.

Property management company sent out a repairman to look at it, and the quote for a repair is so high that it makes more sense to replace the 18-year-old oven at this point. Which is probably a 2-3 week wait, unless I swim out into Long Beach Harbor and pirate a container ship and unload it myself.

It's a good thing that I have three grills (two which can be used as ovens), an induction burner, a griddle, two sous vides, and a [gasp] microwave.

I think I'm gonna go through a lot of charcoal and Traeger pellets in the next few weeks.

Well, I get that. But all 5 million old Florida folks aren't from out of state. And all nearly 6 million Californians older than 65 aren't from in-state either. And assuming the rates are roughly average (I know different states pay out different amounts and there are a bunch of other factors, but I couldn't find the raw data there), any contributions coming out of a state like Ca. are despite a larger payout than the one going to Florida for those benefits.

Now, the flipside, I guessed, would be that Floridians are working at a lower rates than Californians, since more of their population is older. However, and I just looked this up, it turns out 54.4 percent of Floridians are between 20-62 (my rough guess on working pop, adjusted for the data I could find. Can tweak if interest), but that number only jumps 57.3 in California, which has a difference of 8 percent in terms of old people, but it's counteracted by 5 percent in terms of 19 and younger.

Anyway, it's an interesting element, but I don't know if its super dramatic. Maybe notable.
BTW different "states" don't pay out different amounts. It's federal and purely based on how much you earned.

I.e. if you've earned all your money in California, and then go to retire in AZ, you don't get a smaller social security check because you're in AZ than you would if you stayed in CA.

However, that does mean that the average payout in California is likely to be higher than the average payout in Florida, because average incomes are higher. Which is exactly why California (and most of the other donor states) are donor states--their incomes are higher per capita so they pay more than their population's share of taxes.

We will both get the maximum payout, and we will start at 62. Not waiting for my money until I'm 70. F that. As it is, we'll NEVER see what we put in. Not even if we live to be 100 (not happening - liver says so).

So she was mistakenly identified as one of Slick Willie's Epstein Island flings? That's a relief. I was afraid that Creepy Joe had sniffed her right up his nose.
