Austin is where you live if you don't want your kids to know that there is a world beyond Texas.

It's like a million miles to their nearest border, which is Mexico.
Thats true

when I went to school there it was a 100,000 pop college town

The State of Austin is to Texas what the State of Madison is to Wisconsin.

Does the rest of Texas even claim Austin as part of Texas? I thought they believed that Austin was just a bunch of hippie weirdoes and disavowed any connection with them...

Exactly.

Dallas and Houston are actually becoming pretty Austin-y.

The divide between attitudes in the rural communities, and those in the urban communities, grows larger every day.  Same as lots of other states/regions.

And then there's the folks in San Antonio.  As long as they have their heavy metal and tacos, they don't give a rip what's happening in the rest of the state.

a small town just north of San Anton would be perfect

I love Fredericksburg.  My BIL just bought about 100 acres right outside of town.  I told him to put an extra RV pad out there for me...

One of my buddies from the Harbor bought a house on Lake Travis to retire to. We will be visiting in the Spring, I think, or maybe next fall. Lots of trips on the docket for 2021 and early 2022.

Munich, Lisbon and a trans-Atlantic cruise in November. Up to Wisconsin for Christmas. The fly to Arizona for New Year, leave there for Cabo on the 2nd.

France in April. Wisconsin all July. We will drive up there.

Need to figure out how to avoid Illinoi.

I feel like there's an interesting interplay between big cities, the surrounding suburbs, and then the rural areas of the state.

I really saw it when I lived in GA.

Atlanta is hardcore liberal. The rural areas are hardcore conservative. The Atlanta suburbs are basically libertarian. The social attitudes are a lot more liberal than rural areas because it's still a very metropolitan area where you're exposed to people unlike yourself constantly, but those people have money and they don't want it taxed away so they are fiscally conservative.

It wouldn't surprise me if Dallas and Houston are becoming pretty liberal [by Texas standards], and the surrounding suburbs have people fleeing the city area who are more socially liberal [by Texas standards] but have enough income that they're fiscally conservative and want to keep it.

Gimme a call when you're in town!  I live about 10 minutes from Lake Travis.

Well, 10 minutes from part of Lake Travis anyway.  And hour and a half from the opposite side.

But anyway, call me.
