they don't use people like back in the 80s

no need for a rodman or someone to hold the dumb end of the tape

probably don't even scribble in a field book any longer

are plumb bobs even in the tool box any longer

In a few weeks we have to go to Chicago for a wedding. We are staying downtown, but won't be out and about.

Can no longer do that.

My hat is off to anyone who tries to organize a large Corvette outing. Experience will tell you they are challenging even on a good day.

To make it more challenging, try three starting locations, different routes, all converging for lunch at a designated time.

That’s what the Amazing Corvettes Club of Atlanta set out to do on a beautiful Saturday morning in July. We were fortunate enough to tag along to enjoy the fun and camaraderie.

The goal was for the three groups to rendezvous at the Hawg Wild BBQ & Catfish House in Young Harris for lunch.

Some of the routes club members took required over an hour of driving with portions over twisty North Georgia mountain roads to make it more exciting.

With precision planning that rivaled the Normandy invasion, all three groups arrived within 15 minutes of each other. All we could do was smile, nod our head in recognition and say, “You got to love it when a plan comes together.”

In the end, all the planning paid off because we had a good lunch overlooking a picturesque Lake Chatuge with fellow Corvette enthusiasts. Not sure life gets any better than this.

To top it off, the Memory Lane Car Museum was only three miles away!

A few days ago, General Motors executive Mark Reuss tweeted a photo from C8 Corvette Z06 testing that appears to show at least five of the car's test mules in a loading bay. Along with the photo, he shared the following:

"What an amazing week. So proud of this team. Those who know what these are and where this is at....well, you know. Z comes to life."

Word.

We were staying in Monterosso al Mare, so all three of our dinners were there. The first night was at L'Ancora della Tortuga
L'Ancora della Tortuga, a really amazing restaurant built right into the side of the cliff. I had Ligurian fish there and it was amazing.

I need to make that myself, to be honest. And then I need to go back to Italy.

We stayed in Monterosso but ate various meals in most of the villages.  I couldn't tell you the name of the place we went in Riomaggiore, I don't think it even had a sign.  Some friends of ours who'd been a couple years earlier told us about it, and how to find it.

Kind of funny story, we got there around 3 in the afternoon and they were closing for lunch to reopen later for dinner.  They turned away a couple that showed up walking just behind us, but they waved us in.  I think they thought I was Italian, I have that look about me..  They started speaking Italian to me, and I played along as well as I could. :)

But that was definitely one of the most delicious meals I've ever had.

I want to go back desperately but our next Europe trip (Summer 2022) is going to be Budapest, Croatia, and Greece.  I suspect I'll find some decent seafood in the latter two locations...

why not do it when the students are not scheduled to be in school?
just a thought
We have official school hours, so you'd have to extend those.  And you'd have to pay the cost of keeping the power/water/AC on.  And you'd be keeping a largely female work staff past sunset, etc.  Plus, we already do our lesson planning and preparation outside of normal work hours already.

Things they try to avoid.

Plus on top of what I've said, in my district, we have to do 8-12 additional hours of PD outside of school hours.

No I get it and I'm all for giving teachers the hours they need to navigate these requirements.

But in the case of our school district, the early release Wednesdays didn't exist pre-COVID.  Ten years in the district, and it wasn't there.

If they changed it after a decade+ of not having it, for the sake of the teachers, then their messaging was poor (non-existent).

They were doing it for the sake of the district, so that they didn't lose teachers over failing to meet or failing to provide evidence of meeting the requirements.
Hell, one year on the Rez, I had an asshat HR lady (who was someone's cousin or whatever), tell me my certification was expiring and I needed to suddenly provide evidence of 300 hours of PD.  That district gave out a simple sheet of paper that basically said "I did this" for every 1-hour training we did.  So for like 3 days, I basically think I'm jobless and homeless (teacher housing is only for teachers on the Rez) as I scrounge around my house for every old PD paper I was given only to be told she was wrong and I was fine.  Which I thought i was, but that district was a dumpster fire.  They asked me for the same document 3-4 times because "they didn't have it on file."
But the districts making sure everyone gets their hours and keeping track of it for the teachers is a safeguard against losing teachers who aren't organized.  Not many would be lost, but with the teacher shortages, you don't want to lose any because of a lack of evidence of busy work.

As far as teaching/learning hours, each subject has a set number of minimum minutes per day that have to be taught.  They vary by grade level and by state.  And it can be an average.

So for science and social studies, it's low, like 30-40 min.  So we will do 2 weeks of one, to really get into a topic and explore it for 60-70 min a day, then switch and do 2 weeks of the other.
A 30-min lesson on a major science topic at the end of the day when you're cleaning up/packing up becomes useless and choppy.  So we maneuver the time around to make it more meaningful.

Everything we're in charge of and have autonomy to decide is what's best for our students.  I promise.  The horse shit stuff we have no control over is usually what parents complain about, and should.
