That shit all started within the past decade. Kids need structure - a regular schedule.

This new flex crap is BS.
It's interesting. When I was in HS, we had regular hours, but a rotating schedule. Your classes had an order, but they rotated. So Monday started with class 1, then Tuesday class 2, etc. with three days of block scheduling. To create a two-week schedule. It was odd. I think the point was that you had certain classes that weren't always right before lunch or at the end of the day.

Brad's point got me thinking about the oddities and sacrifices my parents made to get us to school. My mom worked three 12s, so she could often do most of it. My dad did the 20-minute AM drive because he worked 10 minutes away. When my mom couldn't pick us up, my dad would leave work early, drive the 30 minutes to get us home, then back to work, which was like 20 with light traffic, but could be more. That was a sacrifice. (We also went earlier for prayers. Which was partially because my mom wanted it, and in retrospect because my dad didn't hate the idea of getting to work earlier)

Then when I was in HS, we did bus in the morning early on, then some pickup scheme in the afternoon, usually. There were a slew of carpools, one that settled when my friend could drive, so he dropped his mom off at work near my house. then drove us. It was kind of a dystopian mess for him, but we weren't the sort that was buying a kid their own car.

Weird to think about the production. It would've been easier to send me to the local public HS down the street, but it was decided (not by me) that I wouldn't thrive in a particularly chaotic environment. The school could be good, but you had to be willing to get brash with adults to make it happen, and I was unlikely to do that.

Yeah, someone gets an idea that teachers should have ongoing trainings.  Good idea.  Okay, let's make it a rule.  Done.
No consideration how to do it, when to do it...no universal way to ensure it gets done.  No accountability.  No system.

Kind of like the dog chasing the car with no plan for when he catches it.

why not do it when the students are not scheduled to be in school?

Dang. All my kids ride the bus to and from. I take the youngest a few times per month because he misses the bus. The oldest is 18 and has been driving himself the last few years. He’s going to the local community college for now.

Does your school system just not have a bus system ?  Lots of kids my kids age wouldn’t ride the bus, but mine didn’t have a choice.

back when my daughters were in school, had to take them to daycare which would see that they got to school because I had to be at work by 8am, then kids went back to daycar after school until I could pick them up after 5.

these days, the elementary have before the bell and after the bell programs.  Drop the kids off before going to work and then pick them up by 6 or so.  Much easier

Minimum days or Early dismissal days or half days exist because states require teachers to have a minimum number of professional development hours in order to renew their teaching certification.  In AZ, we have to renew every 6 years and have 300 PD hours.
I don't know the legality of teachers acquiring those hours on our own or within our districts, but I do know that evidence for such things was always random as hell.  Some would electronically let the state know you had 6 hours on a certain date and others would literally print out a 'proof of PD' on colored paper.  Imagine collecting several dozen of those over 6 years and if you lose them, you're out of a job.

Anyway, as a teacher, we hate these days.  It means we either smash 6-7 hours of instruction into 4 or more commonly, drop everything but reading and math that day.  The kids go home and we spend all afternoon doing district-chosen professional development.  Because we have to get those hours.  Not because it makes us better teachers.

Scheduling these days was all over the place, initially.  Some did it on Fridays, others on Monday mornings.  The most common is Wednesdays.

As for hating parents, districts just schedule things to screw the fewest number of people.  As someone with a mainstream student and a special needs student at a separate school, yeah, you're often going to be in the minority side that isn't getting a convenient schedule.  But 5 angry parents is better than 500, any way you slice it.

As for teachers and parents, we hate shitty parents.  Not the busy ones, not the ones who wish they had more time for their kid....the shitty ones who are actively bad for their child.  Theyre mostly ghosts anyway.  The parents we need to see most - we never see.  The ones we want to communicate with consistently - all of the phone numbers in the system are disconnected.  We don't like the parents that undo all the good we do every time their child goes home.

And we hate PD.  It's busy work.  We'd rather have a consistent schedule and just teach.

No I get it and I'm all for giving teachers the hours they need to navigate these requirements.

But in the case of our school district, the early release Wednesdays didn't exist pre-COVID.  Ten years in the district, and it wasn't there.

If they changed it after a decade+ of not having it, for the sake of the teachers, then their messaging was poor (non-existent).

I went to private schools. K-8, there was a public bus. Not sure about a school bus. HS there was a school bus that was just very expensive.

There was an odd case when I was in summer camp that I’d take the bus, which I later realized was like two blocks closer than the camp itself. But if you dropped a kid off at the camp, you had to get in a drop off line, and it was just easier. I suppose I should ask about that some day. Had I been a little more independent/old, it was a crazy easy walk.

My elementary/middle school did after the bell. It was not very engaging and maybe kinda pricy?

YMCA operates after-school care at my kids' former elementary school, we used them for several years.

I need 54 PDH's every two years. So do all licensed engineers (30 PDH) and land surveyors (24).

That's what nights and weekends are for.
