I'd consider putting a misting system out on my patio... I might actually spend a lot more time out there in the summer if I had cooling...

I got new running shoes and slowed down, a bit.  They have more cushion and more weight.

I'm still slow, but 11:03 for a mile this morning.  I feel like I'm running really hard, but that's slow.  The extra 40 pounds doesn't help.  I'm running, swimming, lifting, and drinking.  That last item is probably keeping the weight on.

I'm doing one of those 4 things.

I love being capable of doing things myself...

...but some things I'd still just rather pay someone to do.

Brakes are a good example. I know how to do brakes. Heck, they're about as simple as it gets on a car. I'm happy doing brakes on my Jeep. It came time to do the brakes on my Flex, though, and it was a hot Saturday, I'm in the garage with the car jacked up, I've got one wheel off before I realize I don't have the right socket, I'm sweaty, and getting frustrated.

So I said screw it. I can do brakes, but I don't have to. That's a task I can throw money at.

Same as an oil change. I can do it. Did it for years on my vehicles. Would rather throw money at it and let someone else get dirty.

Some tasks are easy enough to do yourself, but simultaneously cheap enough for it to be MORE than worth it to pay someone else.
Don't get me wrong, I am capable, just would rather pay someone else.

I use to do all my own car repairs (other than totally rebuild an engine, there is not much that I have done on a car), house repairs, I have fixed ACs, put in new water heaters. etc.

I did it because i had to, couldn't afford to do it otherwise.

Now that I can pay someone to do those things, I pay someone, my time is worth more than what I pay someone else to do it.

Yup mine has a variable speed pump and is programmed to run at different speeds throughout the day.  It runs higher when the Polaris is cleaning, and runs at slower speeds the rest of the day.

I also sometimes run the waterfalls overnight, it helps cool the water.  They have their own, separate pump.

Pool water is currently over 90 degrees in my pool.

It's hard to keep it under that around here. 90-92 is about the norm.

Yeah I still love working with my hands, but I'd rather spend my time building and creating.  I always have a project or 5 going.

For example, I'm currently in the midst of adding a long wall of built-in wardrobes into my master bedroom. We don't really NEED them, we have a huge walk-in closet, but there was a ton of dead space at one end of our overly massive master bedroom, and I thought they'd add some visual interest and architectural detail to the room, while also being functional.  We'll be able to move most of our clothes out of the master closet and put a weight bench and a treadmill in there and use it as a home gym.

I find that kind of work interesting and fun, as opposed to changing oil which I find to be tedious and dull.

Exactly. It depends on what it is. Hence why I made a distinction between the Jeep and the Flex. The Jeep is a toy.

Wrenching on the Jeep is a hobby. Wrenching on the Flex is a chore.

That's got to feel like pee.

I'm running, swimming, lifting, and drinking.
I run only when something dangerous is chasing me.
I swim for leisure.
I lift for utility.  When I moved this past time, I could still move everything myself, but it ran me ragged.  Not fun.
I rarely drink anymore.  I don't know why.

The other thing, to me anyway, is how much you are saving.  Oil changes are so cheap that by the time you back out the cost of the oil and filter to do it yourself you are really only saving maybe $15 to do it yourself.  OTOH, changing your own brakes saves a LOT.

Another example that just REALLY ticked me off:
My daughter was born 9/17 and it was a scheduled C-section.  Ie, I knew in advance that it was going to happen on 9/17.  So I get a call from the wife on 9/16 that we have no hot water.  I checked the price for a hot water heater for our house and it was ~$1,250 to replace what we had (50 Gal high efficiency gas).  I called a plumber and they wanted $2,500 to do the job.  I had to pay it because I was having a daughter the next day but it REALLY ticked me off.

I've been changing hot water heaters for 40 years (first helping, then leading, then doing it myself) and even though I don't do it often, it is MAYBE a 3-4 hour job.  Good god, the plumber charged $400/hour!
