In my old house, I upgraded attic insulation to R50 and that helped enormously.  That house was two story and always was hot upstairs, I didn't have two ACs.

Yikes, and you hit in the 300s this month?  Whew.

Our previous house was 1400 sqft and our electric ran about $200 in summer.  Maybe $50 in the winter.
1970's house with poor insulation, original drafty single-pane windows, drafty doors, etc.

If I owned it, it would have all been handled by now. But I would never have bought this place, so there's that.

I've read up on it and it seems pretty straightforward. My 13yo daughter expressed an interest in it when I told her I'd pay her the same as I pay my service, and that once she learned how, there are probably a dozen pools of our friends and neighbors nearby that she could service as well, and make really good money on her own schedule.  She started studying up on it and I think she wants to pull the trigger on it next spring/summer.  She'd rather do that than babysit.

I'm a little embarrassed to say I use a service.  It's really something I should do myself, but I don't.  I justify it by saying I'm helping the local economy... ;)
I wouldn't even consider doing it myself.  Same way I wouldn't consider doing my own landscape maintenance.

I love being capable of doing things myself...

...but some things I'd still just rather pay someone to do.

Brakes are a good example. I know how to do brakes. Heck, they're about as simple as it gets on a car. I'm happy doing brakes on my Jeep. It came time to do the brakes on my Flex, though, and it was a hot Saturday, I'm in the garage with the car jacked up, I've got one wheel off before I realize I don't have the right socket, I'm sweaty, and getting frustrated.

So I said screw it. I can do brakes, but I don't have to. That's a task I can throw money at.

Same as an oil change. I can do it. Did it for years on my vehicles. Would rather throw money at it and let someone else get dirty.

Some tasks are easy enough to do yourself, but simultaneously cheap enough for it to be MORE than worth it to pay someone else.

I'll do my own disc brakes.  I pay someone else to do drum brakes.

And disposing of the oil is enough of a PITA that I just let the shop do oil changes, too.

Pool chemicals are pretty straightforward and not really all that time consuming, I was just REALLY busy when we first bought the house, and decided to spend my time elsewhere.

I used to do my own oil changes

I used to do my brakes

I used to cut my grass

I used to be 30 years old

Use to do those and Shocks and Exhaust  stopped that by the mid '80s.Just didn't like brake work though easier than shocks.Had Chilton's Manuals - timing and adjusting/advancing spark.Use to shoe mules and send smoke signals and make my own Likker too(not really)

A few doors down from me. $741K for 1100 sf in a house that looks like outdated crap inside. On a postage stamp lot.

This is insanity.

I feel like Ca houses are hit-and-miss on insulation.

They hardly need it.

Had a pool for 10+ years. Did all the maintenance.  Filled it in a few years ago because it needed replastered and I was tired of it.

One thing I did to help with the electrical consumption was to switch to a 2 speed pump. It ran at two speeds- the usual 3450 rpm and then 1725 rpms or half speed. At half speed it only moves I think 1/4 the water but it uses 1/8 the electricity. And it’s better to move the water constantly anyways. You end up needing to run the pump 4 times longer but only use 1/2 the power.
