I think in any eventuality, I'd want everyone to be qualified for their job.  To think otherwise, is, to me, nonsensical.

I think forcing people to take out massive loans as teenagers to make themselves more qualified is nonsensical, but here we are.

for the vast majority of jobs, college isn't much help in earning qualification

College was never intended to be a vocational program and aside from a few disciplines like engineering, it works poorly as such.

Business is the most popular degree right now. Lots of people learned "business" by starting one. My opinion is that I do not see value here, unless there is something specific, like a BS in Accounting, for example.

Second is health professions. This is great.

Third is social science. This is not great.

Fourth is engineering. Should be higher.

Fifth is biosciences. This is good.

6. Psychology
7. Communication and Journalism
8. Visual and Performing Arts
9. Education
10. Computer Science

Of those listed, which majors are best positioned to pay off loans?

Of those listed, which are "forced" upon teenagers to enter?

Say what?  Nobody is forcing anybody to do anything. The very fact that so many people are willingly signing up for these loans is part of what’s driving college tuition up so high to start with.

The world needs more craftsmen, not more zoologists, marine biologists, journalism majors, and English majors.

When you go to buy a house the lending institution looks at your ability to pay back the loan

why dont lending institutions do that with going to college

majors in things like art, music and literature should not be areas where students can get a loan unless

their major includes teaching that subject

I think being qualified for one's job is an obviously desirable thing.  The alternative can be bad.  I said nothing about anyone being forced to attend college.

Folks lend to college students BECAUSE the loan cannnot be forgiven, generally, through bankruptcy.  That makes it more reliable as a loan than a regular signature unsecured loan.  These are in fact unsecured loans.  Do away with the bankruptcy provision and the viggorish would be vigorous.

No bank would make an unsecured loan to a 19 year sociology major if government were not involved.

maybe student loans should only be available from the colleges themselves

let the college that charges an arm and a leg for majors that wont be worth while suffer

from their own actions
