i'd like to get ahold of @betarhoalphadelta 's brews.... it's in essence the same thing... ferment up some recipe and instead of reaching the point the yeast dies and then adding a jolt of sugar to capture the bubblies, you let it flatten completely.... THAT, is what us'n hillbilly's call a 'wash'.
Most beer isn't strong enough to kill the yeast... Typical ale yeasts will often continue living and fermenting up until about 11-12 ABV. Some specialty yeasts (Belgians, etc) can get up a little higher. And a few brewers (like Sam Adams, Brewdog, and a few others with extreme ABV) have selected yeasts generation after generation that can get above 20% naturally fermented.

If you add the sugar to get the bubblies, it won't get bubbly unless the yeast is still alive.

Those idiots on the West Coast created a category of beer called Black IPA.  Black India Pale Ale.  Black.  Pale.  Ale.  So there you have it.
Even worse... That style of beer is a play on the American IPA (distinguished from the original English IPA).

So it's an American Black India Pale Ale.

The folks up in the Portland area wanted to rename it a Cascadian Dark Ale because American Black IPA made such little sense. But they're weird. It's Portland, after all. That name never caught on outside of the PacNW.

Just call it American Black Ale.  Given the breweries that are making it, everyone already knows it will inevitably be a brutally over-hopped bitter bomb.

I gave a wine talk in France and stated that the American motto is:

Has anyone noticed that the "craft" IPAs kind of all taste the same?  The beer cooler at my nearby convenience store is full of them.  The labels are artsy and hard to read.  I recently spent quite some time looking for one that wasn't an IPA and failed.  Walked out with a six pack of 16 oz. PBR.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby kicked off Big 12 media days on Wednesday with a reminder that college football will still be dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic this fall, and he made a strong push for players to be vaccinated.

I find many/most are simply over  hopped, so they taste the same because the hops dominate any flavor.  Some are actually pretty good, the ones with balance.

The same is true with wine, often folks overdo some attribute for effect and the wines end up out of balance and are not interesting, or good.  Think about those overly buttery chardonnays or zinfandels with 18% alcohol.

We in the US have a belief that "everyone" should attend college, unlike Europe.  We send well over half of HS grads to college.

Maybe this started with the GI Bill, this expectation.

So, we ended up with this circular spiraling combination of funding, debt, higher fees, larger universities, etc. and a lowered product.
