We haven't had oppressive heat here, yet.  Last year I think the highest high was 93°F, which wasn't that bad.  I usually walk with the wife and if we stay in the shade it's fine, so far.  The track where I run is about a quarter in the shade and the rest open, but it's very open so I catch a breeze usually.  And I sweat a lot, which I suppose is a good thing.

Here in Houston we are getting the Ark ready cause it seems that it has rained for 40 days in a row
They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

This is eye-opening. Every HS kid should know about this place.

Rankings[edit]
Recent school rankings include:
  • Missouri S&T was ranked No. 1 for Missouri's best value college by SmartAsset "with an average starting salary for new graduates of $67,300. Tuition at the University is $9,246 and students receive an average of $8,274 in scholarships and grants." (2020)[131]
  • Missouri S&T was ranked No. 42 in the United States for "40-year return on investment, or net present value (NPV) with an average return of $1,548,000 for a bachelor's degree recipient" by the Center on Education and the Workforce. (2019)[132]
  • Missouri S&T was ranked No. 82 among the "best graduate engineering schools" by U.S. News & World Report. (2019)[133][134]
  • Missouri S&T was ranked No. 25 in the "top 25 STEM-centric schools" by Forbes. (2018)[135]
  • Missouri S&T was ranked No. 3 in the "top 10 places to get an engineering degree in the U.S." by USA Today. (2016)[136]
  • Business Insider ranked Missouri S&T No. 5 among the "most underrated colleges in America". (2015)[137]

I like stats like that first one becuase the selection bias is super interesting there. That's not to say Rolla doesn't have a good engineering school (it does). But it's not just a factory that makes kids into soon-to-be wealthy professionals.

(I'm also kinda confused about the NPV math. It certianly doesn't seems to be a case of raw return on investment, but I'm sure I'm missing something)

Humanities can be fine as a degree, but it's less likely to pay out than STEM obviously.  Quite a few jobs just require a college degree, in something.

My neice got a very expensive degree in psychology from Emory and then worked at an insurance company for a while, then did the mom thing.

Most graduates with a degree in humanities do get some kind of job somewhere that is OK.

I have on recent occasions had to call various call centers about whatever.  My memory from ca. 2000 is this was ALWAYS a disaster, I'm sure y'all had the same experience.  I recall calling our health insurance outfit about some bill they didn't cover and it was a nightmare.

These days "they" seem to have cleaned this up.  I don't know who is being hired, but they are courteous, knowledgeable, efficient, and speak English.

Pays less, for sure.

Shoot, if Rolla didn't have a high starting salary, that would be a terrific black mark. Three in four grads are engineers or in engineering technology.

"They" are filming the series "Ozark" around us, the past few weeks and next.  I was looking at filming one scene in the park below us, there were a ton of people involved, and a green screen, I think, we were on the opposite side of it, it might have been for lighting.  Evening shot.  We get street closures and sidewalk closures and restaurant closures, Ozark is one of the current projects.  We often seen multiple lines of heavy cables running down the sidewalks.  Power?  Dunno.

I watched a few episodes of that series a while back on the advice of a friend and got bored and quit, maybe I should gander again?

I don't know if it previously was filmed around here.

Indeed it was. Georgia's play for entertainment money has been quite a success.

'Ozark' Season 4: Production Crew Spotted Still Filming in Georgia (cheatsheet.com)
'Ozark' Season 4: Production Crew Spotted Still Filming in Georgia (cheatsheet.com)

A few months back, I was jogging in the park, nice day about 50°F and came across snow, a LOT of snow, in one area, melting fast.  There was a production group breaking down over there, about 5 large trucks worth and cables everywhere and tents and trailers.

It is amazing how a fairly short scene can require a relatively massive operation.

It’s only rained here in SE Texas twice this summer. Once for 27 days and then once more for 42 days.

Seriously it’s rained almost nonstop every day between late April through this week, save for a brief respite in early June.
