Today, I did four miles, in an hour, I'm doing intervals, running pretty hard and then walking.  It's slowly coming back.

Jackson's "Foot Cavalry" in the Civil War would do 4 miles in an hour, and then rest ten minutes, and do it again.

All day.  Often barefoot.  Carrying probably 20 pounds of rifle and ammo and water.  Poorly fed.  And then do it again the next day.  It's a killing pace for a horse not in good shape.

I briefly knew a lady who did long distance horse riding events, 100 miles.  She said she walked the horse about as often as she rode.  Every 20 miles there was a stop to take the horse's temperature and if it was over X, your were DQd.  I asked if they took her temperature and she laughed.  A human can outrun almost any other mammal, I'm talking a human in top condition versus an animal in top condtion, there is a western antelope that can sustain some ridiculous pace for hours.  In a day, a human can outdistance a horse.

Yeah, Rolla.  I heard it was pretty good, and one in St, Louis some of my friends kids attended, I forget the name.

Isn't some Missouri U of Mining thought to  be good?
Is that UM-Rolla?

I was also looking at the South Dakota School of Mines or Michigan Tech for engineering school.

Missouri state is a different school. It’s in Springfield.

I was just going to correct that. Officially it is now known as the Missouri University of Science and Technology. Mizzou-Tech.

I've always found it interesting how often a school called "X State" can be almost unknown, a flag ship, or a second up.

For being slow and fleshy, without sharp teeth or claws, that endurance served us well...

A human alone unarmed is not very dangerous, but give him even a stick and he becomes quite a bit more dangerous.  Not many animals can run, climb, and swim.

We're masters of none.

This is eye-opening. Every HS kid should know about this place.

I served with a marine who ran the bad water Uber marathon, and on the USMC dime.  He was a native American from the southwest.

The fastest I've ever ran the 3 mile PFT is 18:32.  I am NOT a runner.  This guy? He ran it in 13:20 consistently.  I was dumbfounded to learn that was not even a regimental record... I mean, that is WORLD class.  His trick, though, is he could hold that pace or near it for hours.  Literally.

That race was a bit over 100 miles... 110 iirc.  Over three days... you'd start with the lead over the next guy you finished with the day prior.  He didn't win it, but he placed.  I think they had that event once every 3 years.

He was a jerk- his only real talent was running and since that was a good part of our physical expectations (we had to run a minimum of 3 miles every day, and had to be able to run the 3mile PFT in under 19:00) he caught a lot of attaboys from command.  He was left in charge after a deployment once... for two weeks he ran our asses in the ground.  When the team commander returned and found half the team on medical light duty due to shin splints, twisted knees, pulled muscles and broken freakin bones in feet he went ballistic- and rightfully so.  We ran 10 miles a day for 10 days, and at nearing HIS pace.... it didn't impact him at all, but it fuggered up most mere mortals.

I swear we'd have beaten him to a pulp, if we could have caught him.  Seriously.

From what I've been told, Chennai is the best technology school on the planet.  The Indian Institute of Technology Chennai, to be exact.  Those who apply and miss it, and then several others in India (Mumbai is close behind) "settle" for MIT.

I am unclear if it is really that good or if it is national pride that determines that from Indian perspective, but I wager its a pretty dang good school.

I've always hated running. A lot of it is just being big. Too much stress on my lower extremities.
