We have residential neighborhoods near us where the occasional somewhat odd looking apartment building can be found here and there, usually dating from the 1960s.  These areas today range from pretty nice to very nice homes interspersed with low rise apartment buildings, which are pretty well maintained but look odd today.  I'm told back in the day, a lot of the houses were turned into 3-4-5 unit apartment buildings and the areas were running down fast.  It's common to see a smallish house built in ca. 1950 with a large addition out the back, formerly apartments, turned back into single family homes.  Even Ansley Park had this "malady", and now homes there are a million and up, often considerably up.

I think a sign of a deteriorating residential area is when small houses are torn down and a "sketchy" apartment building goes up.  I don't think anyone could build this sort of thing today due to zoning.

Closer to us older homes are being torn down to build mid to high rise luxury apartments.  This one is going up right around the corner, two older homes were demolished recently.  One of them had been divided for offices and the other I think was abandoned.  But this area is already "urbanizing", so it's not the same issue.

This is another area around another corner where two popular restaurants are being taken out along with two abandoned houses to build two condo towers with 500 units.  None of this is intended for students of course, we're a bit far from Tech.  One restaurant has closed but no demo has begun.  There are some nice large trees we're going to lose, but the two small houses are falling down.

In other news, "things" around here are pretty much "back to normal".  Traffic seems above normal, but perhaps I just don't recall how it was.  Maybe that reflects office workers returning to the office?  We've had low humidity of late which is nice, but I think that is about to change.

We walked about the area in Macon and it was stultifying, we needed a shower when we came back to the room.

I read this Delta variant may indeed be an issue at least in places with low vax numbers.  I don't think "we" will stand for shutdowns now though barring something disastrous.

I know work-from-home may still be a thing, but someone is clearly going back to the office here in the Twin Cities. MnDOT's automatic counters are showing that volumes are right back to where they were pre-COVID.

I wondered if all this new office space going up near me was going to end up vacant, but indications are that won't be an issue, folks are returning to the office.

We're only sending back maybe 10% of our workforce into the office.  We've already sold off all of the additional land around our large campus, and several of the buildings will be sold or leased as well, although I'm not sure what the market for existing office space will actually be, going forward.

I've been wondering if some of these large office parks that are currently sitting dormant, might be rezoned and turned into loft apartments or something.  There's currently an extreme housing shortage, and an extreme office-space surplus, so that might be one way to balance the scales a bit.

Apparently people like people. And they want to spend time with people, rather than alone at home. Even "coworker" people. :smiley_confused1:

I don't understand it, but then not everyone are anti-social tech workers like 94 and me...

Anti-social sounds much nicer than misanthrope. :)

I prefer misanthrope, actually... Helps figure out who to stop associating with because they're dumb and don't know what it means.

In my latter years, I would work the workdays between Christmas and NYD, largely alone.

Same.

I'd go in, work perhaps 3 hours, accomplish more than in two regular work days and lead people to believe I must have been there 12+ hours every day they weren't.

The advantage of being in a customer-facing role was that between Christmas and New Year's, absolutely nothing was happening.

So while I was still officially working those days, it was basically "check email a few times" and that's it.

Can you be anti-social but also customer facing? Seems at odds?
