It's important for some people, I think, to show their intellectual superiority to strangers.

One way to attempt this of course is to ridicule their beliefs.

Never have I suggested someone is smarter when they don't believe in religion/god and less smart when they do.  Never have I suggested that someone becomes smarter by stopping that kind of belief.
I do note that in 2,000 years, there is zero evidence of any type of god.  Faith is what people use when they don't have a justifiable reason to trust/believe/know something.  
You could believe any absurdity based on faith.
Thus, it's an irrational belief.  
I simply find it odd that adults would willfully hold such an irrational belief.
