One thing we often do is pay for a bus tour of a new city.  It's usually pretty reasonable, and you get a quick overview, and may spot places you want to spend more time later.  we sort of use cruises this way in Europe, you get a few hours in a city somewhere and might decide you want to return (or not) and spend more time later.

I've had folks tell me they've been to Atlanta, and upon questioning, it turns out they changed planes here.  yay.

I often find interest in "out of the way" kitchy places that are unassuming but interesting.

We stayed at the downtown Hilton one night (i have a zillion points).  It's pretty convenient for walking around.  We were taking an Alaskan cruise the next day.

The Pike Market, to me, isn't particularly singular, it's worth a gander I suppose.
I think the Pike Market is the tourist thing to do... And we're tourists.

I doubt it will be anything particularly special. But it'll be something to walk through on our way to something else, especially since I think it's about a block or two from the hotels.

Looks like Hilton has a couple of "collection" hotels there, i.e. more boutique hotels. We usually stay at one of those types when we go to Denver which is really cool called the Curtis -- highly recommend for people in Denver. So we'll likely end up at one of those. I suppose I should get booking now though before everyone else decides to travel lol...

Pike Place is a lot of fun.

Eat at Emmitt Watson's Oyster Bar when you're there. Get the oysters and a bowl of clam chowder.

The Curios I've stayed in were quite nice, especially in Paris.  The main Hilton in Paris (Opera) is so so IMHO.  The old Hilton on Courcelles was excellent but they sold it.

The Hiltons in Europe are better than the ones here without exception in my view, in part because they serve alcohol in the exec lounge.  Free.

We stayed at the waldorf in Versailles, I had a deal, twice now, it is really something.

My wife had her first raw oyster ever back on Mother's Day.

She is in no hurry to repeat the experience.

Well, duh.  Along with heavy horse's douvers.  Our usual was to get breakfast there, have a nice lunch out, and then take dinner at the hotel.

They just broke ground on something here called "Hilton Signia", apparently catering to business travelers or somesuch, I don't know how much more they can fragment the market.

The wife loves oysters, I probably told the story about driving through coastal SC and she saw a sign saying "Fresh Fried Oysters", she had a fit, I still kid her about that.

Doesn't mean you can't have them. :)

The wife got me on to Mignonette "sauce" for oysters, I much prefer it to the usual cocktail sauce (unless the oysters are bad, like those I got from the Shell station).

INGREDIENTS
    • 1 tablespoon coarsely ground white or black peppercorns (vary amount according to taste)
    • 1/2 cup white or red wine vinegar
    • 2 tablespoons finely chopped shallots or sweet onions
    • Salt to taste

I've tried that since you spoke of it.

Very good

Anyone have travel tips for downtown Seattle? Going next month and other than things like the Space Needle and Pike Place Market, I have no idea what's cool to see/do.
Kerry Park is where you go for great views of the city. Sunset Hill Park up in Ballard is another great view of the Olympics if the weather is good.

Definitely take a ferry. Washington State Ferries doesn't go to Poulsbo. But from the downtown dock, the Bainbridge Island ferry is an hour round trip and Bremerton two hours.

My favorite fish-and-chips place is Spud Fish and Chips, but none of their locations are easy to get to from downtown without a car.

Ivar's Salmon House's patio is now open.
