From our walk this morning.  A trifle cool.

Without the finger ... this lawn is often packed on weekends ...  our building is there somewhere behind the trees.

Our priorities are our priorities.
This is the argument against a democracy.

I've heard better arguments against pure democracy.

It was fun watching little tykes come up to the horses.  The officers said they had a choice of being downtown or in the park today.  Ha.  Some job.

better than the officers that did not have a choice

Yeah, the APD has 13 horses, matched with an officer.  I chatted with them about their duties variously, they were quite friendly, and a lot of small kids wanted to come up.

Including me.  The wife gave me sanitizing gel afterwards.

I don't think anyone can dispute that the best form of government is a perfectly beneficent and perfectly omniscient dictator.

Of course, that form of government doesn't exist and never will.

To the extent it gets approximated at times, the transition to a new leader seems to be an issue.  But Democracy is the worst possible form of government, so saith Churchill.

This was Churchill's actual quote:

It has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time; but there is the broad feeling in our country that the people should rule, and that public opinion expressed by all constitutional means, should shape, guide, and control the actions of Ministers who are their servants and not their masters.

Churchill was very much a fan of Democracy

Was reading an interesting article about drug dogs, basically that they're extremely ineffective in accurately detecting drugs. But they are very effective at indicating drugs are present, which allows them to function as probable cause on four legs. That in turn can cause some issues for innocent people.

In retrospect, probably a system that needs to be phased out (this would be different than the dogs that actually lead you toward something, though honestly, who really knows how good those are either?)

seems pretty simple to fix

cant they just test the dogs and weed out the bad ones

and if none are acceptable then discontinue the practice

They'd have to do more stringent tests than they do now. There's less emphasis on false positives than there probably should be.

There's also a weird issue because the dogs don't really "know" what they're looking for. They often respond to subtle cues from handlers, and the handler of course usually wants to find drugs to justify being called out. (There's also the other weird element in which saying you "smell" weed is often also free probably cause, because as a citizen, I can't prove someone didn't smell weed, and thus shouldn't have ransacked my property).

so youre saying the police have another agenda to being able to violate ones rights and the dogs are just a way to search a car

when there really isnt any reason
