The city of course builds shelters for the homeless, and low income housing, a lot of it.  But, MARTA money is generated by MARTA operations, and some Federal funding (no state).  And the homeless don't use the stations as shelters.  Many of the homeless don't want to live in a shelter, not all of course.

The Atlanta Mission does a credible job on a difficult problem, I donate to them regularly.

We still have too many homeless of course, it's distressing.  I was surprised how much I saw in DC of folks living in tents.

Do you think neighborhoods of tiny houses (for the homeless) would be a bad idea?  A little bit of privacy, a little bit of autonomy.  Maybe?

be a very good idea, especially if some folks wanted to donate the $$$ and time and land to make it happen

The homeless have options today already they often choose not to use.  Some are mentally deranged obviously, and won't take advantage of much of anything offered.

Others prefer living in a tent on their own somewhere.  And if you provide some accommodation that do use, you have the going expense of maintenance.

I have explored the problem with some folks locally who deal directly with the homeless, and basically its intractable, in their opinion, though they do provide useful services for those who want them, often people temporarily out of options.

Just barebones dormitory housing constructed from flame retardant materials. No bells and whistles such as electricity and running water, just a roof over your head, a mailing address, and a place to sleep and keep your stuff.

It would keep folks off of the streets, without being desirable enough to be a permanent solution if you have other options.

I think many/most of the unsheltered homeless on the streets prefer the streets and their own tent or whatever to some concrete box.

And of course, the majority, I'm told, of homeless sleep in shelters as it is.

The barebones dormitories would be optional, not mandatory

Some are just down on their luck and want a way to get back onto their feet, which would include having a mailing address and a safe place to crash.

Those down on their luck use the shelters now.  I'm told the shelters are often only half full as folks live in tents just down the street.  Bear in mind that many are on drugs and not really "there" mentally. There is no lack of shelter around here, some folks don't like them.  The can use them for dinner, and can get a shower there usually.

One thing they need is showers, and clean clothes.  I'm impressed with the job the Atlanta Mission does.

The shelters are bullshit. A bunch of cots in a singular room, where people can steal your stuff and attack you in your sleep. I would rather take my chances in a tent as well.

My idea gives everyone their own space, that they can lock and get some peace and quiet.

Your first 14 days on campus you will be quarantined. You will be isolated to a dorm room with an individual bathroom and shower stalls. Meals will be delivered to your room during this time. You will not be eligible to leave and return to campus during the first 14 days with the exception of medical necessity.

• Health Checks – Twice a day, a staff member will check your temperature and perform a health screening.

• You are expected to participate in testing for COVID-19 and tuberculosis. This testing is provided free of charge by community partners and a staff member will transport and escort you to the testing site.

The above are requirements at the Atlanta Mission for new participants.

I agree.  My idea of tiny houses just takes it further.  Having your own space is a big deal, that's why many choose a tent out in the elements over a communal home.

They'd get trashed, but they'd be bare-bones structures, but private and free-standing.
