For me a huge part of visiting foreign countries, is visiting their bars and restaurants.  I don't think that will be normal enough for me through 2021, although I will say that crowds will likely still be somewhat diminished, and there's something to be said for that.
Yep. I want to experience the way a foreign country lives, not experience the way a foreign country deals with a pandemic.

That's interesting enough at home, and cheaper.

A thing I enjoy, aside from history, in foreign countries is getting a better idea how the locals live, locally.  That by definition means "away from tourists".  We stayed three weeks in a tiny village in our daughter's home that was pretty neat.  We walked a lot and visited the local "bistro" several times for lunch to the point they got to know us.  This was Jan-Feb last year, before the Thing.

We were oogling one "mansion" and the owner happened to be by and chatted with us, in English, for a bit.  His grounds were impressive.  He owned an ancient gas station garage now converted to hold his antique cars which he showed us.

I used to meet folks who said they had been to Atlanta when what they meant was they changed planes in the airport.

I have dragged the wife past too many battlefields and military museums, including the Maginot Line, which is quite impressive.

LOL. I usually don't count having "been" somewhere unless my feet have touched terra firma outside of the airport.

I've changed planes through Heathrow once, and I've actually had a layover in London where I had to take an Uber from Heathrow to Gatwick which would I guess qualify for my definition...

...but I still don't say I've "been to" the UK.

Same with Hong Kong. I've been through the airport several times, and I've left the airport and gotten into a car and gone across the border to Shenzhen on several occasions, but I don't consider that having "been to" Hong Kong.

I have "lived" in three states, for any period of time, and they are more similar than different, GA NC OH.  I lived longest in OH oddly enough.

The wife talks about living in France for 3-4 months, but that plan has not materialized.  I doubt it will.  In reality, we usually visit some place and hit up the tourist spots and think we've been there, which technically is true.  She has a long monologue on how daunting "living" in France can be, things like getting permits for everything under the sun.

We went to the DMV here to get our state DL and were out in 40 minutes, I was amazed, she was incredulous.

Man, the DMV experience here was actually pleasant.

In Illinois, it was dreadful. Just for the DL, you waited in 7 lines for 7 separate people - the last one being the cashier. The greeter, who pointed you to the next line, was normally OK but the rest were downright terrible to deal with. The last time I renewed, it took a little over 3 hours.

Here, I did my DL, Title and Plates in 30 minutes, with ONE person. She even took the picture herself, and took my payments. Also walked out to the car to verify the VIN.

I'd like to "live" in Texas from January 3rd to March 15th annually.

Unless I'm just living there with a long trip to Iowa/Nebraska in July and August

here the title and plates are in a different location and almost pleasant.
The DL office on the other hand is not good, almost terrible.
I need to upgrade my DL to the new one that is TSA approved for commercial flights

I've noticed the CA DMV has improved significantly since moving here 20 years ago... Definitely more streamlined and makes me less stabby.

Last time I had to renew my DL I was in and out in probably 15 minutes.

That’s good!

When I first got my license 120 years ago, I thought my family was going to catch a murder charge before it was done.

Well if some of those battlefields weren't hotly contested it'd be a real drag.
