The Mongols happened, in effect.  Later the Ottoman Empire took hold and had considerable power.  The Jews kicked out of Spain in 1492 often migrated to the Ottoman territories, where they were welcomed as "people of the Book".  Muslims consider Jews and Christians as related, worshipping the same God.  They just think they had a distorted Bible, unlike the Koran.
So I ask the question, and you cite the Mongols, which we're all aware of.  But beyond that, it seems we're not sure.

And it's odd here - Muslims considering Jews and Christians as related, worshipping the same God...........because Mulsims worship the same god as Christians and Jews.
What a bizarre sentiment.

I have zero desire to invest in a restaurant.  You need to be present or better damn well have people w skin in the game that are present all the time.    I can think of dozens of other illiquid investments I'd rather make.   It's just not for me, that type of risk tolerance.   I'm not even interested in making passive investments into them, outside of accepting fractional indirect ownership via a pooled vehicle (mf/etf).

I had part ownership in an upscale restaurant in Cincy years back, it didn't end well.  I did get some benefits while it lasted though, basically $1500 a year in dining.  And a  tax write off.  It was a nice place when I bought in, various and sundry dragged it down, including the recession.

It was nice while it lasted though.  It's nice a rather mediocre restaurant that does great business.

Why is that a "bizarre sentiment"?  As for the demise of the Islamic Golden Age, the Mongols clearly played a role.  Beyond that it gets complicated.  I wouldn't say we're not sure, it's just more complicated than some simple one liner.

It was partially restored when the Ottoman's gained power and a large empire.  When the Jews were kicked out of Spain in 1492, many ended up in that empire.  They had no place else to go in effect.

Meanwhile, Europe was involved in almost constant warfare which had the side effect of developing increasing effective weaponry and tactics.  The English long bow was one such example.  I read a piece somewhere that suggested Wellington would have been better served at Waterloo by men with longbows than muskets.

When the Europeans "discovered" America of course it generated enormous wealth which was a significant factor in their dominance in the 17th and 18th centuries, and the Ottoman Empire started to recede, though it might still be around if they had not gotten involved in WW One by some serious missteps involving a German cruiser.

That is a very odd story, there is a nice book about it.

I don't think I would do it. Based on friends who do own restaurants, it's way more than a full time gig - and they always watch the store. Otherwise, they would have partners they don't want.

I grew up in a family that was in the restaurant business.  I would advise against it.

As others have said, either you, or someone you trust completely with a lot of skin in the game, must be present at all times.  All of your employees will steal from you.  Even trusted managers.  And if there are multiple owners, invariably there are going to be multiple ideas on vision, process, etc.  Almost literally, too many cooks in the kitchen.  It's tough business.

My friends finally stopped bothering telling me I should open a BBQ restaurant when I told them all the stories about the one that we used to own.

Does someone want out for a reason? They a little too eager to get you involved?Best advice I ever got was what would you do/say if some one asked you the same question.Obviously ask someone you really trust in the business.Good chance it might be picking up.When it comes to investments I seem to be Wally Pipp

Just saw 94s comment above, prolly what he said having rode in that rodeo

I read 30 Seconds Over Tokyo in about the sixth grade.  On  a tactical level,, Doolittle's raid was a ridiculous failure. All the planes and many of their crews were lost for only negligible damage inflicted.

On a strategic level it was successful beyond anyone's wildest dreams. Those guys had serious guts!
That's the first book I ever read. I was enamored by the bravery of these men.

This, exactly.

And they don't necessarily steal. But, let's say the bartender over pours drinks, seeking out better tips. Well, now you have an unwanted partner.

When any exciting opportunity comes my way, my first thought is WHY is this opportunity available?
