I've not used tripadvisor, yelp, or any other service such as that

certainly not reading crazy comments about some place on social media

In my 5 visits, I've only had one bad meal in Italy. Of course, it was near the Coliseum.
Funny i saw an article how they're still finding bits/pieces of the Gladiators to this day

My "suburb" is directly connected to the Austin metro of 2.2M people.  It has two of the five best BBQ restaurants, in the best BBQ city, in the entire world.  Neither of those even made the top 50 restaurants in my area.

You like Tripadvisor, I get it.  I think it sucks only slightly less than Yelp.
Are used to have a job that involved travel to and through a lot of small towns. So I would mostly use yelp and TripAdvisor for things like what are 2 to 4 restaurants that are actually local and then what might sound good.

and even with that small task I was often disappointed or sad.

Interesting list. It’s though that it’s a flat number, just because of geography/current size/etc.

it doesn’t make me laugh because in a city where a couple of my friends live it describes their situation to a T. they were mad about bidding wars, they found a lot in a cul-de-sac they liked and they just built one. (and I get to move to that market soon enough)

"high-speed" rail is being built in Florida right now. The trains max out at 130mph I think- which is fastest thing in the crummy USA train scene- far car from the top speeds trains in Europe & Asia hit. But hey, it's a start, right?

It was called "Brightline" but it's been rebranded as VirginTrains USA with Richard Branson getting involved. The stations/lines are already done and open from West Palm Beach to Ft Lauderdale to Miami. That's all been open for a couple years now- recently just shut down due to covid (THANKS CHINA)-  but super nice brand new trains, super nice brand new stations, and the tickets were cheap. I even took it a couple times. Freaking loved it. You can go from downtown WPB to downtown Miami in about an hr. They are currently building new rail out to Orlando Airport- then from MCO to Disney World.

Downtown Boca Raton is getting rail built and a brand new station built close to Mizner Park and a brand new station and rail is being built at the Aventura Mall (super high-end mall in Aventura- which is a rich ass city just 10 miles or so north of Miami lined as far as the eye can see with multi-million dollar condo high-rises).

So VirginTrains USA high-speed rail is going to go from Miami -> Aventura -> Ft Lauderdale -> Boca Raton -> West Palm Beach - > MCO -> Disney World - and back by 2022. Pretty f'n cool. Just wish they could hit like 200mph. Miami and the stops in between WPB- definitely nowhere near enough room to hit those kind of speeds- but nothing but white trash cows and farm land with cows as far as the eye can see from WPB to Orlando- plenty of space to go faaaaast.
So, I'm looking at a map and have no local knowledge... Correct me if I'm wrong.

I can absolutely see a use for train service across that corridor between Miama and WPB. Could be useful for commuters and just in general due to what I'm sure is horrific traffic.

But I can't see the argument for connecting it to Orlando... How many daily trips are there between South Florida and Orlando? Enough to actually have good ridership numbers? Will it be even close to cost-competitive with driving?

Orlando is one of the few places it could make sense, because quite frankly Disney prefers that once you're on their property, you don't have a car to leave lol... And if you're doing the Disney resort thing, you frankly don't need the car anyway.

But I wonder if there's any way to make money on that leg of the route?

In Texas there have long been proposals for high speed rail from Houston-Dallas, and Dallas-San Antonio which includes Austin.  Personally I'd love it, I could get to Dallas in 1/3 the time without having to drive.  But in general people down here love their cars.

The hard part IMHO is that for a number of those cities, once you step off that train, you almost immediately need a car. I think all of those cities have quite a lot of sprawl going on.

It's much easier now that we have Uber and Lyft, because it's provided a much more realistic way of getting around than taxi service, which usually isn't very good in cities of sprawl. Before Uber and Lyft, unless you knew you ONLY wanted to be in the heart of downtown... You needed a car.

Is there a screaming deal for your part of the world? It feels like it would be where I grew up.

I don’t know a ton about the geography of some of those cities but definitely for Houston. That place will be disaster on foot.

If your high-dollar, high-stress Disney vacation also included a day and/or night on South Beach, with low-effort travel, maybe it becomes more appealing?
