Sadly- much of what goes on is for optics.

Things being cancelled due to cancel culture are most often achieving or changing nothing- but it makes for appropriate optics.

Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

Yeah, the Dr. Seuss estate said they wouldn't publish six of his books, or something like that.  OK, fine, never heard of those anyway.

That's exactly my point.  The members of the losing team rant and rave and ball their hands into fists and pound the table and point out the horrible "optics" of whatever the winning administration does.

The "winners" aren't worried about optics at all.  They're getting their way.

"Optics" are nothing more than people who aren't getting their way, complaining about it.
There are so many posts, I'm not going back through them (so this might already be covered), but I'd make the slight side point that optics might go a little beyond that in one key sense.

Sometimes optics are about side-stepping something. Like I had a convo with a friend about some misstep that allowed for ranting, raving, pounded tables (some on this very board), and said "Well that person that you and I nominally support should not have don't that because of optics." Like the thing the pol did was highly immaterial to anything, but it looked very bad and caught them a raft of shit they didn't need.

we have almost all of the Dr Seuss books

and now thanks to optics they are worth a lot more then they were
That incident is the height of stupidity and really in most senses points out the hollow silliness of most of our "cancel culture" discussion.

The man's estate pulled six books. As far as I can tell, maybe one was actually popular. They folks making the books did the "canceling." And people responded by giving the cancelers gobs of money because it made them feel smug they were "sticking it" to someone faceless group they can't identify. I suppose if giving away money gives them some good feels, that's the point of having money.

So the books are in theory more valuable because people seem to relish being morons.

(And of course there's the sort of funny dueling sidepoints: 1. The Dr. himself was a New Deal Democrat who had political cartoons both pro-cancelation of certain ideas and somewhat morally questionable in retrospect, and 2. The act of cancelation was long a tool of the folks now crying it, and in some spots still is)

I'm surprised they haven't canceled Sean Connery for slapping women yet.

Well sure, but's really my point-- who is the person or group that's really bothering to point out how "bad" the "optics" were?  As you said, you and friend who are supporters of PoliticoX might wince a little because the situation wasn't framed in a more palatable way, but you're still not calling out PoliticoX about it.  It's your fear of the opposition doing so, that makes you wince.

Optics can be shaped more readily than reality, usually.  They can be shaped into something bad more easily than to something good, I think.

A person  truly apathetic about everything is probably clinically depressed.

I mean, my side is in control, the other side is mad, but they're not saying the optics are bad, they're saying the thing done is very bad. And I'm saying the optics are bad in essence to say it looks worse than it is. (I suppose I'm saying he shouldn't have done that because it looks bad and whatever gain there might have been was negligible)

I dunno, it seems like an imprecise framing.

America's Cup is tied 1-1 after day 1.  The team with the better start right off the line won both races.
The Kiwis looked scary-good after race 1 - both because of their zero-errors race and the fact that they've been waiting in the wings the past few weeks.  The Italians, however, showed it's all about the start in tying it up.  I feel they have the advantage, having raced so many more times in qualifying and reaching the Cup Final.
