yep and all you folks that think you will be saving by not using gasoline need to know that the state and federal gov will get that gas tax revenue some way
That will have to happen of course, somehow.  But EVs are quite a bit cheaper to fuel per mile today than gasoline.

So in the days of our lives, electric fireplace edition.  So the converter allowed the fireplace to turn on, but neither the heat nor the motor worked.  So, it could be this thing is just a lemon.  OTOH, it is a UK plug, which generally runs at 240 volts as opposed to 120 for Americans.  Would that difference cause those kinds of issues, i.e. the appliance can't draw enough power to do the more power intensive things?  Or am I thinking about that incorrectly?  Trying to decide whether it's worth exploring getting a transformer of some sort or just throwing the thing out.

would be sad if it wasn't true. how does an FBI lawyer who forged documents which helped kick off a bullshit investigation which cost the tax payer tens of millions of dollars- only get probation?

It likely draws more current than your current converter can convert.  I have this issue with the wife's French cooking gadgets, it takes a large heavy transformer for them to function, and even then they are down on power.

Yep.

Likewise the opposite way. I had one of the little travel converters and when we were in Italy my wife tried to use it for her hair dryer... Lasted a few minutes and then dead.

Too much current.

As for the outlet, there should be no trouble if you have a proper transformer that can handle the current. You'll lose efficiency and your power bills will be higher doing it that way, but you should have enough juice.

That's helpful, thanks.  I already ordered a different fireplace for the bedroom, but my wife has a little crafting station in the basement and if I can get this to work she'd probably like it down there.  Plus if she spends more time in the basement she won't be bothering me. Win win.

The wife had a transformer built into the kitchen in Cincy.  It weight maybe 50 pounds.  She bought a smaller one for here, maybe 20 pounds.  It worked for a year or so and then shorted something.

She wants another one.  I've told her the heavier one's likely last longer, but then she can't get it down from the cabinet.  My solution would be to ditch the ancient French gear and buy new 'Murican stuff.

A transformer better be well made.Is it as a step or down transformer and designed for what you are doing? since you need a converter kit and transformer,Have an electrician look this over or at the very least plug it into a GFCI.This could smack of debacle if you start McGuyvering everything.

Heh good point.  My reading suggests I need a step up transformer, probably 5000 watts.  Not sure it is worth the effort.

It's not worth it. Maybe look into re-wiring the FP.

The wife asked about putting in a French plug when we redid our kitchen.  The electrician may not have understood, but he said no.

We have US 220 for the dryer and stove of course.

California has about an 80 cent tax per gallon
that's not a lot per mile, but it is a factor
