I don't know how this ends... But I can't think it's going to be good.
Call it an infringement on our rights, but removing the $$$ from the news is it.
No ads during the news and no viewer figures released.

The cost of having a channel do the news is a 30-minute block of no-revenue programming and not knowing if you have the most viewers or the fewest.
The 24-hour "news" channels will be reassigned for what they are:  fear-mongering crap.

24 hour cable news are the worst. I blame it for a lot of the problems we have.

Outside of the free speech issues here, I'm not sure this will do it, because...

The bigger issue isn't even the 24-hour news... It's the amplification and spread of misinformation/disinformation via social media.

The thing to remember is most people don't watch or read the news. Most people don't even read news items beyond a headline.

It's how things spread. There was a study on sharing of stories via social media and people shared stories with salacious headlines without even clicking the headline. They "like" or "retweet" things without even knowing what's underneath the headline.

And then you have memes. Most social media understanding of the political/news world is spread by sharing of memes, which by definition cannot contain the level of detail needed to understand a complex issue.

Understanding is hard. Clicking "share" is easy.

You're correct, nobody's forcing anyone to watch these propaganda outlets.  People watch them because they WANT to watch them, because...

...they only want to see, hear, and read things within their own echo chambers.  Watching a cable news propaganda outlet is no different than reading the echo chamber within your circle of friends on social media.

Broke my little finger trying to catch a football

sprained my ankle many times

but one thig that has never hurt me is hearing some ones opinion

on something

yes we live in a world where some ones opinion can be spread far and wide

so what you big babies

if you dont agree with that opinion one of the solutions should never be used is to cancel that opinion from being heard

You're mistaking a discussion about what his happening with a discussion about "what must be done" about it.

Censorship and cancel culture is not, IMHO, the answer ANYONE should be looking at. Because who decides what gets censored or canceled? OAM? I'm not on board with that lol!

What I'm saying is that we've built an edifice that is incompatible with our brains' ability to handle it, and it's causing problems.

My *hope* is that the generations who grow up in this environment figure out coping mechanisms to handle it. My *fear* is that humanity is just too tribal, and that we'll splinter as a society because we can't handle it.

They're explicitly designed to keep you watching, just as the social media websites are.  This is known.

I may disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

24/7 cable news has millions upon millions of viewers. And it's designed to attract more and more viewers and gin up fear and anxiety- not make people really think or inform them. And they always for the most part just have on hack after hack- and whenever they get interviews with politicians they never press them.

Fox averages like 3.7 million viewers, CNN like 2.5 million, and MSNBC has 1 million. And all have millions of subscribers to their YouTube channels. And all of their websites have millions upon millions of hits daily.

They exist only to entertain, lie to, and frighten people. Most of it is absolutely awful. I mean for christ sake MSNBC just went on a 4 year evidence free based conspiracy theory about Russia. Before that Fox News went on a several year run on Obama doesn't have a birth certificate. And they all are always for war and pro military industrial complex. They hardly even let dissenting voices on anymore. Actual investigative reporters like Glenn Greenwald and Jeremy Scahill were on MSNBC all the time. They used to go on and slam Obama admin for it's drone wars and expansion of the security state- and were still allowed on although maybe less frequently- but as soon as they ridiculed Hillary Clinton and the DNC about their evidence free based Russia conspiracies- they were basically banned from going on MSNBC.

It's basically all nothing more than propaganda and state TV. They are always pro war, pro security state. I mean for christ sake the ex-head of the CIA- John Brennan works for MSNBC and the ex-head of the Director of National Intelligence- James Clapper- a man who f###ing committed perjury under oath to congress- works for CNN now. This is absolutely horrific, unconscionable, and criminal.

I agree with you for the most part but Fox News didnt come anywhere close to pushing the birth cert theory as CNN did the Russian hoax

I would also add to your list NBC, CBS and ABC

There is no news anymore
