I glanced at the ESPN FPI rankings just now, Clemson still at 2, which I don't get, at all.

UGA still at 5, which is OK with me given these don't matter, I'm not sure of the basis for this stuff, getting clicks maybe.

Is it updated?

College football Power Rankings for Week 1 (espn.com)

They have power rankings also I see, per above.  Then they have FPI below, which is updated.

2021 College Football Power Index | ESPN

Meh.

Yeah, the FPI is going to need a lot more data for it to mean much.

Rankings often don't move much early. And they sometimes don't move if games are certain kinds of close.

SP+ uses something close to yards per play, which UGA won 4.2-3. But in terms of scoring, a Pick 6 is all kinds of fluky, and that really was the main difference score-wise.

The FPI is an algorithm. It is still using lots of preseason data, but a close game against a top five team is unlikely to change much. Oklahoma dropped a spot, because a close game against a not top 25 game will change things a bit.

I knew FPI is basically a computer "poll" and projects chances of winning the NC etc.  I also am pretty sure sports sites contrive as many poll types as possible for clicks.

Whether your team is 3 or 8 or 15 at this point means little beyond the obvious.  But they gotta entertain.

Unseen, unheard of, and unlamented, NIU apparently edged Georgia Tech, which was supposedly getting better.

I realize NIU has pretty decent teams at times.

Instant replay: Main takeaways from NIU’s 22-21 win at Georgia Tech – Shaw Local

The ACC really took it on the chin this past week.

The GT experiment was a certain kind of popular one. I was and am hesitant about its chances.

It's not really a "poll." It's a power rating akin to those for gambling purposes. They can be useful or interesting depending on what you're looking at

That said, anything that ranks things is good for the clicks business. And a ranking that doesn't immediately respond to a game's outcome is going to drive a lot of irrational people to boost business (even if the ranking isn't about responding to what just happened).

We talk about "computer polls" which are not polls but results from some algorithm.  We used to talk about them more than now.

To me, it's a "computer poll", in quotes.

GIGO.
