HC Comps
« on: September 16, 2023, 12:43:32 AM »
I'm busy printing and cutting for WN, but in taking a break, I was looking at all-time HC records.
It's interesting to see which HCs from different eras wound up with similar W-L records.  I thought I'd share a few.
Keep in mind this isn't just comparing similar win%, but actual W-L.  So while Saban and Dabo are basically the same in win%, Saban has like double the volume.  So they wouldn't be grouped here.
.
~150 W, 75 L:
Kyle Whittingham, Mike Gundy, Terry Donahue, Les Miles, Dennis Erickson
I would have guessed Erickson had a better win%.  Donahue spent most of his time at UCLA.  Whittingham and Gundy are contemporaries, obviously.
.
~180 W, 30 L:
Urban Meyer + Gen. Robert Neyland
Hard to find a comp for Meyer's career, but go back 80 years and find a legend.
.
Switzer (OU) + Yost (UM) + Bud Wilkinson (OU)
.
Hugh Freeze (OM) + Larry Coker(Mia) + Jack Mollenkopf (PU)
.
Earl Bruce (OSU) + John Robinson(USC)
.
Don Nehlan (WV) + Frank Solich (UNL) + Kirk Ferentz (Iowa)
.
Jim Harbaugh (UM) + James Franklin (PSU) + Doug Dickey (UF, UTK)
.
Mack Brown + Amos Alonzo Stagg
.
John Vaught (OM) + Dana Bible (everywhere)
.
George Welsh (UVA) + Johnny Majors (Pitt, UTK) + Jackie Sherrill
.
Fisher DeBerry (AF) + Bill Yeoman (UH) + Mike Leach
.
Fun one:  Paul Johnson (GT) + June Jones (Hawaii) + RichRod
.
Paul Pasqualoni (SU) + Barry Alvarez (UW) + Jeff Tedford (Cal)

Well the higher in volume you go, the fewer comps there are.  Dr. Tom may not have any peers.
He is deadlocked with Switzer in win%, but with 120 more games.
Osborne is Bob Stoops, but with 60 more wins.  He's Bo Schembechler, but with 15 fewer losses.  He's LaVell Edwards, with half the losses.  Lou Holtz with 80 fewer losses.
No one else has his volume with so few losses.
.
The Nehlen-Solich-Ferentz crew are all at about 180W and 95 L.  Basically 2 wins for every loss and around 300 total games.

Yes, Ferentz overall is 200-136 overall and 188-115 at Iowa.

So he still fits in a category of winning about 6 out of 10 games,  which makes him border-line Elligible for the hall of fame,  despite his 200 wins.

I guess I'm just counting FBS then.

Ferentz's 12-21 record at Maine isn't included.

Especially if you only won 30% of those games.
