Ryan McGee, who works for ESPN, talks about his dad, who was an SEC official, saying that officiating is getting consistently worse, because they are becoming more and more reliant on knowing replay will baul them out on wrong calls.

I also thonk the speed of the game, and the larger space its played in, makes it way tougher
I think we also just see more of it. Back in the day you had like three grainy angles and no ability to replay. Now we have more cameras, HD, different feeds, better broadcasts, better slo-mo. So plays that used to be missed but the cameras missed are now right in our face.

It could be overall officiating has gotten better but we just notice the bad calls because we can see them better, per above.

Can the refs call a penalty on the crowd?  I think they can on a band, right?

Remember the opposing QB used to be able to tell the ref that the crowd was too loud, and they'd stop action and tell the crowd to be quiet.  Wild

I kind of like the idea of refs changing calls based on fear for their lives. That's a home field advantage
wish it would have worked in the Vikings vs Cowboys game back in the 70's

The trash on the field thing appearing to contribute to an over turned call is indeed a very bad precedent.  I think they botched the call from start to finish.

Horns should have been called for unsportsmanlike - 15 yards

It could be

Penalties can't be assessed against the team, based on crowd behavior.  As stated above, they could assess a penalty on the team, based on the band.  But this was the student section not the band.

I suppose they could have tried to figure out a way to call delay of game, but it was actually Kirby Smart that stopped play on the field when he ran out to complain about a bottle being thrown.

was not expecting that result in the Texas-UGA game at all. But then again seems like nothing about this season has gone as expected at all. we're living in the wild west of CFB.

USC needs to fire Lincoln Reilly so Michigan can hire him.
that'd be my dream OC hire. doubt Riley would go to Michigan as an OC though, he's likely off to the NFL as an OC if he gets fired imo.

Not if the Browns can get him 1st
not sure why anyone would want to coach the Browns so long as they are tied to DeShaun Watson's contract and so long as Jimmy Haslem is the owner. Seems like a recipe set up for failure.

I'm not so sure
It's in the rulebook,  someone on surlyhorns found the exact section and posted it.  I don't care enough to find it for you, so if you don't want to believe me that's fine too.
