There aren't that many blue bloods, anyway.  I have 2 in the bag.

  • MDT can take PSU before you can get to PA. In fact, MDT can take both PSU and Pitt before you get to PA, so unless you want to take Temple, you're pretty well blocked off from the Northeast. And because MDT has OSU, you'd have to take a crappy school like Cincinnati, Toledo, or Miami (OH), to even get there.  Cincinnati is the path if I really want to get to PA in 2 steps.
  • To get to Mizzouri, you have to take either Illinois, Northwestern, Iowa, or Iowa State, Kentucky, or Louisville. None are anywhere near blue blood (Iowa probably the closest). But Badge is only one hop from Mizzou so he can block you before you get there.  Iowa is better than Mizzou.  Why would Mizzou be desirable?  Every fan in the SEC wants them booted.
  • To go South, you have to go through Kentucky, which means Kentucky or Louisville. Neither is very good. But then that only gets you to Tennessee, and UTK is already gone. Who do you want, Memphis? And then from there you can expect Auburn is gone, Arkansas is gone, UNC is gone, Clemson is gone, so the most desirable teams in the south would be snapped up before you can get through to those states.  Agreed that the South is done, pretty much.  There is a chance to scoop Arky maybe but who cares?  The 3 others are battling it out in the South.
  • Your best bet here I think is Iowa to then get to Nebraska. That gets you to Colorado if you want a West Coast expansion. But if OAM takes OU next [as I predict], then he's got the drop on you for at least the Buffaloes, and would be one step ahead to either Utah or AZ/AZST. And regardless of the ruling on whether AZ actually "borders" CA, he's going to consistently be one step ahead of you to California and therefore to OR/WA.  Indeed.


I feel like the anchors of your conference at best are Notre Dame, Michigan, and Nebraska. Because you're geographically at a disadvantage from getting anyone other "historic" programs.

So basically the B1G is terrible without Ohio St. ??  :)

Just my $0.02 anyway.

I think the contiguous rule came into play after my joke post of "I'll take ND." so......it is what it is.

It'll be interesting where OAM goes from here. 

@jgvol I'm not saying the Big Ten is crap w/o OSU... You're basically trading ND for OSU, and Nebraska for PSU. IMHO both of those are downgrades, but they're not chopped liver. 

I'm just saying Purdue, Northwestern, and Minnesota aren't exactly prizes. Iowa is probably the strongest traditional Big Ten program of what you have in your immediate field, followed by Illinois. Purdue counts if you include basketball, but I think we all know that it's football that moves the needle.

It will be similarly difficult (by which I mean, teams I don't want) for me to escape to the west.  In my obvious attempt to wall off Penn St. and thereby try to acquire some other schools first (this is not intended as a slight to PSU, I only left them alone thus far for strategy's sake) I forewent westward expansion earlier, and now that will be much more difficult.  Honestly, the real west is a lost cause for me at this point.  OAM can scoop all those up way before I'll have the chance.  

In my defense, I didn't give this any thought when I started and only started looking at options when everybody had made a couple picks and I could visualize it better.

Wait, is there some rule that two conferences can't have a school in the same state?  I don't recall seeing anyone state that.  But granted I've only been loosely following the proceedings.

I mean, if you lose the flagship in a state that's an obvious blow, but some states have reasonably desirable secondary teams.

No, conferences can have schools in the same state.  jgvol and I already have schools in Indiana.  Also, I think, if there aren't any P5 schools left available in a state, or there weren't any to start off with (like, say, New Mexico), you can skip over it.  But I need to check with OAM.....we might have to take G5 schools if they're there.  Don't remember. 

What I meant for myself was, anywhere westward I go, somebody else will be able to get the desirable schools first.  Realistically, I'm looking at leftovers.  And that while somebody can theoretically go through my territory to get to PSU, they can't do it before I take it.  They aren't getting Penn St., their attention should likely be focused elsewhere.

Yeah, I don't see any reason why two conference can't have a school in the same state. jgvol and MDT already both have schools in the state of Indiana.

I also don't see any reason why a single conference can't have multiple schools in a single state. jgvol already has both UM and MSU. 

It just gets tough to have to take a school you don't actually want just to get through one state and into another. I.e. Colorado--if the Buffaloes get taken do you really want to pick CSU or AFA just to get through the state?

I suspect that was a key part of how OAM envisioned the exercise.....what do you get when you're forced to think regionally?  

Well, I suppose you'd probably get the old conferences.  But of course, we only have 4 players here, and there were more old conferences than that, so...

Well, yeah.  They're the only one.  And it takes at least a couple sacrifical states before you can move east enough to get the next one.

This is a large part of why the PAC ultimately failed in a television-ratings-driven paradigm.

And of course, it's exactly what I told PiratesRoost would happen, back in 2010.  He refused to believe it was possible.  So did PAC leadership, obviously.

OAM is pretty well-positioned... 

...which might not be surprising since I think he was probably thinking about this a long way ahead of a lot of the other participants.
