volleyball was once dominated by the west coast

now it's the rust belt
well, except for a volleyball program in Austin
Non-beach volleyball is an indoor sport so it makes sense that rust belt schools could excel.

Most bigtime schools have indoor swimming and diving facilities as well, but the little-league version of the sport is all outdoors which gives the warmer climates a distinct advantage in developing young talent.

Horns have squeaked out a couple of relatively close ones against our own B1G team in Austin this weekend.  We'll see if they can complete the sweep today, and then we get to host your Geaux Tigers on Tuesday.

Nope, no sweep.  Horns lose to the mighty Hoosier baseballers 4-2.

LSU on Tuesday.

I’m not sure I’ve ever played volleyball outside of a few church picnics when I was in high school, so I’m far from an expert on the nuances of beach vs indoor court  volleyball.  But I worked with a guy who played volleyball at Kentucky.  He said one year he was there a bunch of them went to Florida for spring break.

I guess they were on the beach and some guys were wearing UK volleyball gear.  Some guys challenged them to a game of beach volleyball.  He said he and his teammates kinda laughed and agreed to play them thinking they would kill them.  He said those guys busted their ass.  He said he (and apparently most of his teammates) had never played on the beach before and it was completely different than playing on a hard surface.

I believe beach is also has two-person teams instead of six?

I used to live near a modestly good program. Seemed like an interesting vibe. I know a smattering of grad transfers could use a last year to join the team after four conventional seasons.

After moving to AZ, we had a staff volleyball tournament in the gym.
I took off my shoes and socks and hopped onto the court...and my whole team was looking at me.
.
I guess I had only ever played it at the beach.  I didn't even consciously go barefoot, it was just automatic.
I shrugged and stayed barefoot.

Wow! This is a huge upset. The Rick Heller Iowa baseball program is pretty good. It has not been very good.

Olympic beach volleyball, yes.  Bar league sand volleyball, no

Depends on the bar and the league, but yeah.

We actually have a few sand volleyball bars in the Austin area.  They each have multiple courts and they tend to designate one or two as the "serious" beach volleyball court where they play 2-person, and the rest are for the beer-league-softball types that will play 6.

I can't imagine trying to play 2 person volleyball at all, let alone after a couple
