My dad had the same story when he would drive to Clarksville from Houston. It took him longer to get out of Texas than to get from Texas to ClarksVegas.

That.....just shouldn't be.

It's less than 300 miles to Texarkana from Houston.  It's almost 500 from Texarkana to Clarksville.

It's true that it's nearly all interstate from Texarkana to Clarksville, so you can make better time, whereas it's highways with some towns you have to go through from Houston to Texarkana, but still.  I take that route to get to my mom in Memphis and I don't understand how over half that trip could be in TX.

This Tennessee thread seems to have turned into a Texas thread and it wasn't me that did it.  So there.

One could also say...

The Texas thread is over there --------------->

Well, let's get back to Clarksville for a moment, then...sort of. When I lived in Clarksville I was right off of Highway 41 ALT, and as often as not, when I drove from Clarksville up to Chicago to visit my college buddies, I would take Highway 41* (which heads up north through Kentucky and western Indiana before going to Chicago then into Wisconsin as well). Rambling Man is, of course, a key feature of any good road tripping mix, and I always liked that I was driving on the highway that the old boy was born on. Fortunately, I was not in the backseat of a Greyhound bus.

*Other times I took I-24 west through Paducah and Metropolis, then I-57 up north through Illinois. I liked Highway 41 better. It was just about exactly the same amount of time, and I liked the "backroads" of Indiana better than the interstate in Illinois. Not that Highway 41 was really a backroad, but you catch my drift.

Route 41 is pretty cool. I used to use it as an I-94 alternate all the time.

Around here (between Tampa and Miami) it's called the Tamiami Trail.
