ask a Sooner

ask Switzer

Switzer said Testaverde was the best QB they'd ever faced.  OU totally shut down Miami's rushing attack and still allowed 28 points.
I'm not arguing against 71 being better than 86 is the consensus, I'm just saying the "why" behind it isn't so cut-and-dry.
If Miami had beaten Penn State, EVERYONE'S opinion of 86 OU would be elevated, including their fans' and HCs'.

but, they didn't beat Penn St

and 86 Penn St wasn't 71 Nebraska

that's the "why"

Right, but the point is that an outcome that didn't involve OU directly affects the Sooners' legacy.
86 OU's crime was losing to a team that was a heavy favorite in a 1v2 bowl matchup.  That's all.

We create these chasms between perceived quality among teams.  71 and 86 OU were 11-1 teams.  Both lost to elite teams.  86 OU finished 1st in the nation in scoring AND scoring defense.  71 OU was 51st in scoring defense.

I'm not posting about this just to argue.  Just noting that what's plainly opined isn't necessarily true.

yes, 1, 2, 3 could happen again but, this season it would have to be the SEC
That would cause some frowns around town, another 1-2 SEC matchup while #5 A&M beats whoever in a bowl game badly.  It's not beyond the Pale.

Who here knows what "the Pale" means?

agreed
and there's no way to know for sure what is true and what isn't

Right, that's what makes the conversation fun.
