This one is pretty obviously Reed, but with the NFL on the line, I wonder if he keeps doing it

Sigh, I wish Charlie Jones was still playing for Iowa but he has wandered over to Purdue to play with his childhood pal O'Connell.  You may have noticed Jones had 12 catches at WR for Purdue last night.

Also for the record, Jones is the returning Big Ten returner of the year.  Say that 5 times real fast.

And yet Reed led the conference in both average return yardage and return TDs

Jones had the better kick return average and had a kick return touchdown.  He also had 635 total kick return yards on 25 returns vs Reed with 376 on 16 kickoff returns.  Reed was definitely a better punt returner last year.  Jones probably benefited from an excellent 2020 in punt returns combined with his prowess on kick returns last year.

Haven't went homer very much but am here and I believe a very good reason

Emeka Egbuka had the best return specialist grade in the Big Ten last season at 80.6. The sample size is the only reason he isn’t higher in this list.

Egbuka only had 20 returns last season for and all of them came in a kickoff setting. He made great use of those 20 opportunities averaging 29.2 yards per attempt. That was the best number in the Big Ten last year and the 10th best nationally. He tallied 583 yards in the return game which was 258 yards more than Aron Cruickshank on just five more attempts and 70 yards fewer than Charlie Jones in five less attempts.

but but statistics say that with more attempts the average goes down

I guess one of the questions would be if you give more weight to a guy who excels at both kickoff and punt returns vs one who is better at one of them individually.  I think touchdowns also gets weighed significantly in the general perception.  Egbuka did not have any.  That is definitely impressive that he racked up so many yards without scoring on a return.  In the end, I voted for Charlie Jones, and I think it is the opposite of a homer pick in some ways since he transferred from Iowa to Purdue after spring ball.  I was not a big fan of that move, but I still anticipate him having good punt and kickoff return numbers this year and better receiving numbers (sigh, Iowa offense).
