Yeah, I was just thinking of worst AQ team

2004 Fiesta Bowl Pitt was memorably bad as well, though not the worst. Blasted by Urban Meyer's Utah team quarterbacked by Alex Smith.

edit: I see Orange already listed this team back a few posts.

Yeah, 2004 Pitt and 2010 UConn were pretty bad AQ teams.  2010 UConn making the Fiesta was considered so out of nowhere that it caused 3 coaching changes in the BE immediately following it.  Dave Wannestedt was fired at Pitt, Bill Stewart was essentially forced out at WVU, and Maryland hired Randy Edsall.

I think I read the 65-7 was the largest bowl game blow out.  I'd guess in regular bowl games, once it's 38-7 the horses get pulled and pulled again.

A lot of the large blowouts appear to be in championship games.  Figured the playoff would eliminate the one "fluke" undefeated participant.

As far as regular bowl game, there was a Nebraska-Northwestern Alamo Bowl, when Northwestern won a share of the Big Ten, and it was Nebraska's first non-major bowl in forever.  I remember a lot of people saying it would be like the Purdue-KSU Alamo Bowl letdown a couple years earlier.  Nebraska went out and waxed them like 63-10

Purdue had two recent bowl appearances where they faced SEC teams (Auburn and LSU) full of future NFL talent. Those two SEC teams had records vastly underperforming their talent level, and both beat the tar out of Purdue to 56-7 and 63-7 final scores.

I had quit watching Purdue by the time of the LSU game, but I recall the Auburn game being in the quiet period between Christmas and New Year's where I was technically "working" but nothing goes on that week, and my wife was at her office. I was on the hook to buy and assemble a shelving unit from Target and planned to wait for the game to be over... And I think I left the house around halftime because at that point the game was MORE than over.

Sadly (for us and for Purdue), LSU's record was not really underperforming, it was actually probably overperforming considering the depleted roster Orgeron left us with.  Really, we shouldn't have beaten Alabama last year, we kind of stole one there, and UGA consequently treated us like the team we actually were in the SEC CG.

I think Purdue was without their starting QB last year when we played.  Definitely didn't help their cause.  I knew holding them to 7 was fool's gold, but DAMN did I not see this year's travesty of a defense coming.  But on offense, that was probably the beginning of what would be this year's record-setting group.

I remember posting here last year that I thought we had the best overall WR group although perhaps not the best WR or even #2 WR.  Some of the Buckeyes asked who we had like Marvin Harrison, Jr. and....??...whoever their #2 was last year.  I explained again, maybe nobody, but overall I thought we had a fantastic group of about 5 guys who really looked the part and played well.  I feel more justified in that now, with Nabers smoking the yardage records and BTJr. leading the TD receptions, with both in the top 10 of each category, and another guy who did well when called on.  Last year's group also had another excellent guy we missed this year.  Looking back at the Purdue bowl game, maybe that's when things started really clicking for our QB.

But what I really remember about that bowl game was the traitor Drew Brees coaching for the Boilermakers, actively working against many fans and players who idolized him.  Da hell was he thinking....helping his actual college team and stuff?

Gophers to Detroit vs Bowling Green on Christmas +1. I guess I'm going down to Ford Field that day.

Noticed Minnesota getting a bowl bid and thought “aren’t they 5-7?” Turns out there weren’t enough teams to fill all bowl slots and Minnesota was next in line due to good grades:

“NCAA rules allow five-win teams to fill spots, with the order determined by Academic Progress Rate (APR) score from the most recent reporting period...Minnesota also qualified for a bowl in 2015 with a 5-7 record on the strength of its APR score.”

The bowl season means less and less, and next year, even less than that.

Will I watch UGA-FSU?  Probably, though I may be on a plane.  Will I watch some other vague bowl game?  Probably, channel surfing and dozing off.  Will I watch the final rematch between Texas and Bama?  Probably not.

I wish they had waited for Army/Navy. One of those teams will meet the true criteria as both are 5-6 now.

I have always thought once they get to the 5-7 teams,  they should take the 5-7 team that has gone the longest time without a bowl.  That would be the team with the fans most excited to go to a bowl.  Minnesota went to a bowl last year and lost their last 4 games this year.  Is there any Minnesota fan excited to go to Detroit for a bowl this year?

On the other hand,  being an Iowa fan,  there is a part of me that likes that Nebraska has not gone to a bowl since 2016 and wants to see that streak keep going, and I want Iowa to be the team that keeps Nebraska out of a bowl each time.

But then again part of me wants Nebraska to make a bowl because that would make Fearless happy.

You want Fearless to have to go to Detroit?

We all know the pluses of having your team make a bowl game, any bowl game, and they are fairly significant.  Some of us think it's a time to play mostly underclassmen, maybe give the uppers a couple series if they want.  We get AP rankings after the bowls which now makes little sense, to me.  We've gone back to the Olden Times.

Hell, I just like having random but still somewhat meaningful, or at least useful, college football on in the afternoon during that week between Christmas and NYD.  Between opt outs, guys already in the portal, and coaching changes, this is truly just watching laundry
