Bowl positioning heading into week 8
« on: October 16, 2018, 01:07:19 PM »
  • 7-0 Ohio State - clinched bowl eligibility.
  • 6-1 Michigan - clinched bowl eligibility.
  • 5-1 Iowa:  Needs one more win - this is a given.
  • 4-2 Wisconsin:  Needs two more wins - this is a given (both RU and IL visit Madison).
  • 4-2 Maryland:  Needs two more wins - The Terps should make it but it might not be easy.  They should be IL at home on 10/27 but they will also need to either win in Bloomington or pull off an upset against IA, MSU, tOSU, or PSU.
  • 4-2 Michigan State:  Needs two more wins - This is almost a given.  The Spartans host Rutgers to end the season and they should obviously win that.  Then they just need one more and at Nebraska looks like it should be no problem even if they lost all the rest.
  • 4-2 Penn State:  Needs two more wins - This is almost a given.  The Nittany Lions play RU so that should be one of the two that they need.  Then they would just need one more and they will be favored in several.
  • 4-3 Indiana:  Needs two more wins - This could be tricky.  The Hoosiers already beat Rutgers and they don't play IL or UNL.  The most likely path would be to beat Minnesota (away) and Purdue (home).
  • 3-3 Northwestern:  Needs three wins - Will the real Northwestern please stand up.  If they play the rest of the way like the team that won in East Lansing they'll make it with room to spare.  If they play like the team that lost to Akron and needed OT to be Nebraska they'll be home for the holidays.
  • 3-3 Purdue:  Needs three wins - Those three close early losses could come back to haunt the Boilermakers.  One problem is that their two easiest remaining games (MN, IU) are both on the road.  Even if they win those they'll still need to win one of their other four (tOSU, MSU, IA, UW)
  • 3-3 Minnesota:  Needs three more wins - The next two weeks will be telling.  Both are games that could go either way.  If they win both they'll be almost assured of a bowl.  If they lose both they will just as surely be out.  If they go 1-1 they'll still be on the bubble.
  • 3-3 Illinois:  Needs three wins - I can't see it happening.
  • 1-6 Rutgers:  Needs to win out - No chance.
  • 0-6 Nebraska:  Needs to win out - No chance.

I always enjoy Jerry Palm's projections.  He has MSU-Texas A&M in the Outback Bowl.  I can get on board with that.  IIRC MSU and Texas A&M had a planned home and home that was dropped when Texas A&M moved to the SEC, but I can't find anything about it.  I seem to recall a while ago, like when I was still in undergrad, on those future schedule sites, Texas A&M was an opponent was in the distant future, like 2013 and 2014, haha.

I'm in general interested to see how Year 1 of the well-before NYD CFP goes.  I (with 2 small kids and thus home anyway) liked the NYE playoff during the off years, but I get they didn't like taking the ratings hit.  So I assume those games will get better ratings on the Saturday before.  But I also worry that at least with the NYE games you were sort of rolling into NYD.  With NYD being 3 days later will it feel just anti-climactic? I hope not.  I still wish they'd just put the CFP, plus the Rose and Sugar all on NYD, but whatever.
