At the end of the day it has ALWAYS been and ALWAYS will be all about the Jimmy's and the Joe's. Not the X's and the O's. You can have the best X's and O's strategist in the world- if your players fcking suck....well you're going to fcking suck.
It's easy to say this. But Purdue in 1996 under Joe Colletto went 3-8. Purdue in 1997 with Joe Tiller went 9-3 with a bowl win. The Jimmy's and Joe's didn't change. In 2016 they went 3-9 (1-8 in conf) under Darrell Hazell and then in 2017 they went 7-6 (4-5 in conf) with a bowl win against a tougher schedule under Jeff Brohm.

Michigan has talent, of course. But if you know your opponents X's and O's, it makes that talent look even better than if you don't.

I don't think Michigan will have any trouble with Purdue or Maryland. But with Penn State and OSU still on the schedule... Not having a decided schematic sign-stealing advantage will even things out with teams that ALSO have Jimmy's and Joe's.

Michigan is going to probably smash Purdue and Maryland.

I don't think Penn State is all-that, the only reason I'd be inclined to say it could be a close game is because the game is on the road in Happy Valley- a tough place to play with 107,000+ loud, screaming fans. James Franklin is still their coach however, Penn State has no weapons out wide, a very mid OL, and Drew Allar is a JAG underperforming 5* at this point. I'd be a little surprised if Michigan didn't smack them around to be perfectly honest.

Ohio State will be a whale of a game- it always is. Ohio State's OL ain't what it used to be- it's very up and down and they struggle to run the ball consistently, McCord is a solid good college QB- but he is not even remotely close to CJ Stroud. Marvin Harrison JR is still the best college football player on planet earth however and Ohio State's defense is really good. Should be a heckuva game. Glad it is in Ann Arbor this year.

In the 247 Talent composite, Michigan is #14, one spot ahead of Florida.  Texas A&M is #4.

MSU is #27, one spot behind Washington, who is #26

Coaching absolutely matters

smashing Purdue by 24 is one thing
smashing Purdue by 45 is another

Michigan has been silly vs the spread lately.  And perhaps there's been a reason for that.

You don't need to use Purdue's signs to beat them, but it helps if you want to beat them by 45

Yeah no one is saying coaching does not matter. It obviously does.

Those talent composites are based off 247 'croot rankings. They miss on A TON of 'croot rankings. A&M has a bunch of 5*'s and 4*'s that suck and would likely suck on almost any staff. Lots of kids they gave 5* and 4* ratings won't sniff the NFL. Lots of kids they gave 2* and 3* ratings to will go on to get drafted and be All-Pros. Obviously chances of being an NFL draft pick are higher if you're a 5* or 4*- but there are definitely outliers- and Michigan has more than a few of those outliers on their squad this season.

Bama has 5* All-Word true frosh top 10 recruit in the nation at OT that starts at LT and well kind of sucks....could he get better, sure. Absolutely. He's a true freshman. He probably should not even be starting. Especially at a place like Bama that loads up on 5* linemen. BUT....right now...today...the kid is ass-burgers.

DT Kris Jenkins was a 3*. RG Zak Zinter a 3*. Those guys are going to be 1st-2nd rd NFL draft picks in this upcoming draft. NT Kenneth Grant was a 3*- kid is trending to be a future 1st rd NFL draft pick. Nickel Mike Sainistril was a 3*. He's going to be a top 100 NFL draft pick in this upcoming draft. FS Rod Moore was a 3*. He's going to be a 2nd or 3rd rd pick in this upcoming draft.

I'm far more inclined to look at NFL draft picks than 247 'croot rankings myself...

We must've had Purdue's signs in the bowl game last year.

JJ in conference play (5 games)

75.2% completion, 1,098 Passing Yards, 10.9 Yards Per Pass Attempt AVG, 14 TD's (11 Pass, 3 Rush) vs 0 INT's, 202.5 QB Rating, 93.8 QBR. Hasn't played in a 4th QTR.

His play in conference has been better than his play OOC.

Obv I don't follow Purdue football any more, but I knew way in advance that the game against LSU would be a repeat of the Music City Bowl against Auburn a few years prior.

You take an SEC power with future NFL talent that grossly underperformed their talent level as shown by W-L record, and put them up against a bunch of 2-3* Purdue players that overperform based on scheme.

Purdue might have held their own against a USCe or a Missouri. But not against a roster like LSU.

I can't do rankings yet until I get some injury status.

For UW alone, they are without QB1 for the season, RB1A for the season, about 4 TE's, and now RB1A and WR1A.

I look at other teams too.

Husker Offense - out
O-line::: LT - LG - RG
RB::: top 2 RBs out for the season
WR::: top 3  - starting 2 true frosh and a soph

Defense -
Safety::: one out, one safety questionable, another in concussion protocol
LB::: Henrich out

Until that stuff comes out, it's not possible to rank teams except those 3 on top, who have minimal injuries but have 4-5* backups.
There is a rumor that Brian Ferentz may be out.  Does that help Iowa's ranking?

Edit - I guess Brian is staying till the end of the 2023 season,  but will not be returning to Iowa for 2024

Sounds about right. Iowa's top QB and top 2 TE's are done for the season,  but Iowa's at least got their top running backs healthy enough to play again.  And still hoping DL Noah Shannon can return from his year long gambling suspension.    So there is some hope for Iowa.

The part I am not clear on is if 3rd string QB Joey Labas is healthy enough to start.  Iowa QB Deacon Hill could not have played any worse for Iowa against Minn and basically lost the game for Iowa by fumbling twice.

Labas started last year's Music City Bowl for Iowa.  Iowa won 21-0 with the Iowa defense scoring 2 TD's.
