Big Ten Elimination Pool - Week 8
« on: October 16, 2019, 09:36:47 AM »
Everyone knows the rules by now right?

  • You pick one Big Ten team to win each week, straight up.
  • You cannot pick a team playing an FCS opponent
  • You cannot pick a team twice over the course of the season
  • If you get wrong wrong, you are out.
  • If you miss a pick, you are out.
  • If everyone is eliminated in the same week, you stay in, but you DO NOT get that pick back.  However if someone is eliminated in that week by failing to make a pick, they do not rejoin.
  • There are 14 teams, and 14 weeks, so no worrying about saving a team for the CCG
  • Picks must be posted prior to kick time listed.

Any questions, let me know.
  • Week 1 - 22 players, 1 elimination (1-Purdue)
  • Week 2 - 21 players
  • Week 3 - 21 players, 6 eliminations (5-Illinois, 1-Maryland)
  • Week 4 - 15 players
  • Week 5 - 15 players, 1 elimination (1-no pick)
  • Week 6 - 14 players
  • Week 7 - 14 players, 2 eliminations (2-Iowa)
  • Week 8 - 12 players

Wisconsin

Just sketched out a spreadsheet for the rest of the year picks for me. A couple land mines remain, but if I get through Nov 2 I'm probably safe until Nov 23. Hopefully the rest of y'all have eliminated yourselves by then...

I'm not sure as it's my first year doing it. Do we also normally start with as many as 22 entrants?

When I started looking at my spreadsheet, though, I definitely see where the land mines are the next few weeks. I suspect that it thins out QUICKLY once we reach this point. We all tried to get the lower-tier B1G teams out of the way early in the season when they're playing cupcakes, but I think all of us still have several questionable teams remaining.

I.e. a majority of the remaining entrants still have Nebraska, Northwestern, and Purdue, and two of us still have Rutger. Next weekend (Oct 26), Nebraska hosts Indiana, Northwestern plays #23 Iowa, Purdue hosts Illinois, and Rutger hosts Liberty. Do you feel truly safe about any of those matchups? OSU hosts Wisconsin, and PSU has to travel to MSU. Those are dangerous matchups as well.

The following weekend (Nov 2), OSU, PSU, and Wisconsin all have BYE weeks. Rutger is @Illinois, but nobody can still choose Illinois. Purdue/Nebraska face each other, and that tilt could go either way. The few people who still have Michigan can probably trust they'll beat Maryland, but only 3 teams of 12 remaining haven't yet picked Michigan yet.

This is one of the last remaining "safe" weeks for most players, and then we all run into problems.

Of all the teams I have left Purdue is the one that scares me the most.  Not sure just how bad they are or how lucky they can be for a game or two.

Yep. Hard to pick Purdue to win any game going forward. But also hard to pick against Purdue for any game going forward [except @Wisconsin--they'll destroy us--but who will still have Wisconsin available by then?].

That's why some people appear to be trying to use their Iowa pick this weekend, the next most-likely game that Purdue gets smoked. Because Iowa's schedule the next 4 weeks are Northwestern, BYE, @Wisconsin, and Minnesota. If you don't pick them now, it's hard as heck to pick them until 11/23 or 11/29 when they face Illinois and @Nebraska. If you have Iowa, you take the risk that they take care of business so you can keep your powder dry on Wisconsin and OSU.

Last year we started at 27 and had 5 at Week 8.  However, last year 19 were eliminated when EMU beat Purdue in Week 2, so we were almost immediately down to 8.  Otherwise only 3 had been eliminated.  We haven't had anything approaching that this year, where roughly 2/3 of the initial players were eliminated by one game, but I think we've had more individual games resulting in eliminations.
